Hypothetical Situation: You just received $100,000 and unlimited amount of money for maintenance. You have to start a car collection. You have to have 10 cars in the collection. No one car can cost more than 10k.

Did someone say figure 8? (100% guarantee a field of opponauts would not perform nearly this well.)

I’d buy a fleet of MK3 Range Rovers and never care about reliability again. They can’t all go wrong can they?

and unlimited amount of money for maintenance
Shit just got interesting. That changes everything. Some of these might be hard to find at $10k, but I’m sure some of the older ones will get you there — especially if they’re half-broken and I have all the money I need for fixing!
Miata (maybe a pristine NA or NB)
Audi RS4 Avant
Merc E55/E63 Wagon
Early Wrangler 4-door, preferably Rubicon
Sprinter LWB, passenger version
Se7en (kit version or maybe cheap Lotus/Caterham model)
F-150 crewcab because everyone needs a pickup or tow vehicle
Mercedes SL230/250 Pagoda. We sold my FIL’s for $10k about 5 years ago.
Lexus GX-series SUV for luxury offroading
Porsche 944

6-10. Selection of old Corvettes and Camaros (again, maintenance $, fixer-uppers)

Especially since you have an “unlimited maintenance budget" then you could have a never ending supply of oppo-demo derbies. Since you can just keep fixing them, no matter the cost.

I’ve already got two horrors and experimental (the Rover and the Ranchero), so going down the list, things would be a bit more staid... Actually, not really.
Late 60s Yacht. Probably Cadillac Coupe De Ville. (<10k)
Late 70s Yacht. Lincoln Town Car (<7k)
Mandatory French car. Matra Rancho, shared with TFritch if he’ll kick in the Audi drivetrain for science. (<10k counting shipping, etc.)
52 DeSoto Firedome sedan (<9k)
64 Galaxie wagon (~10k)
85ish Fiero GT (~6k)
49 Pontiac streamliner (project condition for <10k)
36 Ford hot rod to customize how I see fit (<8k-ish)
‘48-50 Studebaker Starlight Coupe (8k)
72 Mach 1 (okay, probably would run me 15k)
81-83 Jaguar XJS V12 coupe (5k for a good one)
‘68 or so Pontiac Catalina convertible (<6k)
Around that point I run out of money.

My list is kind of the island of misfit toys. The ones that are de facto desirable have small fanbases enough that the prices are within reach, and the ones that are less desirable are either quirky enough or impactful enough for various reasons to make them a great buy. Studebaker - an acquired taste, and only so many people want the exclusive fanciness of a Starlight, few with money. The DeSoto - early Hemi, ‘50s styling with a lot of panache, but no fins... whatever. It’s amazing. The Galaxie wagon - not a twodoor iconic hoonmobile... whatever, hoon with up to seven friends! ROADTRIP. The ‘36 Ford - not a Deuce, but that’s fine. Uses the Deuce parts list, but looks classier and is better as a more mild custom. The Jag - most people want the 90s ones with the 6.0, a six, or a convertible, and spend so much time avoiding the late 80s abomination injection that they miss the perfectly OK early 80s HE 5.3. So on, and so on.
I figured with no goodbye post something might not have come off with the Capri sale. I’ll have to put my thinking (or is that drinking?) cap back on.

You are the second person to mention a Honda Beat. I must look up this mystery car.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 13:23 |

haha I missed the part about none over $10k!
![]() 09/18/2015 at 13:24 |
|
The thing about a car from the 50s is if I am buying one it needs to have fins. (Unless Lincoln MKII than always Lincoln MKII.) So while a DeSoto would be cool it wouldn’t be for me. Studebaker is an acquired taste. I like them but I would want a later Studebaker Hawk. 36 Ford isn’t obvious but a good choice. As for the V12 Jag the early version with round headlights looked much better so well done there.
Did you see that Hupmobile? That would be amazing once fully restored.
And if you really want it I would love to see it go to someone on Oppo. Let me know. I could send you a lot more info on it.

Lets make that 8 REALLY clean miatas at $10k each, the older 911, and another older 911 for when the other one is broken.

I was unaware any Porsche 911 was for sale for 10k

Challenge accepted.
I’ll include my Montego on the list with it’s purchase price because in this scenario I can fix it up properly haha.
1968 Mercury Montego MX - $2500
Typhoon
First Gen Bronco
71 Torino Fast Back
66 Mercury Comet
4 Door Wrangler (for the wife, I’ll offroad the Bronco with her)
50s/60s pickup
Bubble Back Mercury Capri 5.0 V8
69 Mercury Cougar
C4 Corvette

There’s something of an unbelievable panache around the grill of a ‘52 - that rolled edge on the hood running down the fenders somehow just looks really mean. The back, unfortunately, doesn’t have quite as much flair.
I don’t think of it really as being that “50s”, more “40s...
gone bad”.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 13:37 |

its a mid engined supercharged Kei sportscar!

They’re cool. And still very cheap compared to Suzuki Caras.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:44 |

Haha yeah, I know. Only chance would be one with a ton of miles and sketchy condition. But that is why I need two of them and an infinite maintenance budget. Can I buy one without a motor?
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:46 |

It’s a tiny mid-engined supercharged S2000. Well, it’d be an S660.
![]() 09/18/2015 at 14:49 |

Mercury + Ford V8 + Weird= right in my wheel house LOL
If it was cheaper I’d have a Raptor on the list.
It’s funny that the First Gen Bronco is probably the most expensive one on the list!

504 Dangel

C6
E30 325i
Saabaru (If only it was in Correct-Hand-Drive)
GTV6 Cup
Phaeton (Depreciation)
Mark VIII (Again, Correct-Hand-Drive version pls)
DB7 (Depreciation at its fullest)
I did make the budget for each car £10k though, not $10k. But you said it was a 10k challenge. ;)
![]() 06/03/2016 at 21:07 |

I completely forgot I made this post. The Aston can be had for £10k? That's amazing! And nice pick with the C6 and the GTV6
![]() 06/03/2016 at 21:13 |

I definitely remember seeing 10k DB7s before, but now the price has risen a little from when I last checked (20k).
If it gets too crazy, just pretend I swap it for an XKR or 3200GT.
But yeah, this was an awesome challenge. Thanks~
