Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This is a pet peeve of mine - people calling wagons “shooting brake” to make them more appealing, while simultaneously not making shooting brakes!

WTF guys!

Kinja'd!!!

Update: To me, and most mentally stable enthusiasts, a shooting brake is a two door wagon. It has to meet fully the criteria of being a wagon, while having only two front doors and a coupé-like roof line. Like this:

A Shooting Break is just a way of saying expensive estate car.

It’s just a way to make people with money feel like they are buying something more exclusive than the rest of us plebs on the street.

I thought shooting brakes were technically 2-door estates...?

“In 2006, The New York Times described a shooting-brake as ‘a sleek wagon with two doors and sports-car panache, its image entangled with European aristocracy, fox hunts and baying hounds,’ In 2011, Top Gear described a shooting-brake as ‘a cross between an estate and a coupé’.”

This is what really gets me. I feel it peaked with the “GLC” where C is for Coupe. It’s about the farthest thing from a coupe there is - it’s a fat arse bloody SUV.

I’m not a buyer. But there’s a portion of buyers who are legit keeping proper wagons alive, and I love those people. People like DeMuro who waxes lyrical about his AMG longroof.

Estate? I’ll allow it :)

I thought Shooting brakes are two door wagons estates.

Fuck.

Okay.

Wagon = long roof 4-door hatchy thing with a big ass boot

Sports tourer = wanky way of saying wagon

Estate = wanky way of saying wagon

Country Tourer = really wanky way of saying wagon

Shooting brake/break = wanky way of saying 2-door wagon. These days, mostly applied to hatchbacks erroneously, brakes should have a longer rear than a hatch.

Look I’m Australian and you’re not. Maybe estate is you and wagon is us. But can we all agree that, like SUV, the sports term is fucking bullshit. And touring is more of the same.

I really loathe all this marketing stuff. I hate how wagons fall out of public favor so they rename them over and over and over. The word sports has lost all meaning this way - these days it applies to a car with nothing more than a mild bodykit from factory. Shorts should mean motorsports which should mean track-ish stuff or at least performance. But the marketers ruin everything we think we know by trying to apply upmarket terms to base models. It broadens the appeal of the base model, but it cheapens everything that sits above the base model. But that’s okay because they’ll just use new words that they haven’t beaten the meaning out of yet.

Man even the base models get ruined. When the base model is the “sports”, people clue in. They realize that sports = worst/cheapest. Everything suffers. Thank god for Rolls, where they never make a bottom-line budget car, and luxury means holy shit this car cost so much to build because it’s actually scary nice and that’s where the money goes.

Marketers are a scourge on this world.

I wish people would buy the car they need rather than the car (ie. SUV) that’s trendy. They’re all wagons for the most part.

This comment has become an article of its own and for that I’m sorry.

Not quite.

Ford did a two door estate with the Ford Escort Mk1.

Kinja'd!!!

and Escort Mk2.

Kinja'd!!!

and Escort Mk3.

Kinja'd!!!

and Escort Mk4.

Kinja'd!!!

Back them an estate was either a two or four door but most estates were four doors.

I take your point but.

Estate = long roof 4-door hatchy thing with a big ass boot

Wagon = wanky colonial way of saying estate.

Lol.

I had to, you realise that, lol.

The C isn’t for coupe, is because the GLC is the SUV of the C-Class. Similar: GLA (A-Class), GLC (C-Class), GLE (E-Class), GLS (S-Class).

There is, however, the GLC Coupe, which yeah, sucks

This further evidence that, to marketers, words have no meaning.

It’s got to be based on a coupe, not a lowly hatchback or saloon. Think Lynx Eventer.

I feel the same way about four door coupes. I know the roofline has something to do with the definition of both, but I just can’t bring myself to call anything with four doors a “coupe”

Blame the Limeystanians for that one, with the Rover P5B “Coupe” that started this mess. The Germans just made it profitable, making a “coupe” everything, and buyers ate it up.

Up next: a 5 passenger “roadster”.

I get what you’re saying, but shooting brakes are a subset of two door wagons or they’re the same thing. That’s what I think.

It’s simply the automotive form of being different, ie if your poor your mad/crazy, if your rich your eccentric.

I have to disagree. You can lay prone in the back, and therefore have a more steady aim.
