The ‘Humble Mechanic’ in cooperation with his friends at DAP (Deutsch Auto Parts) helped diagnose and repair Torchinsky’s Tiguan with a timing chain failure, which is exceptionally common on those early EA888 family TSI engines.
I’ve written enough overly long articles lately. Just enjoy the video and the light ribbing Charles and co. give Jason.
Charles Shackleford, “The Humble Mechanic,” is a former VW dealer shop foreman who started doing podcast videos covering common VW issues, and now him teaching classes on car tech, making videos and being an all around communicator of the technical side of car diagnostic, repairs and common issues are his full time gig since leaving dealer life.
Good guy and very knowledgeable.

The Street View of Jason’s house shows the full extent of his Bad Life Choices...
I don’t believe anyone should take capital purchase advice from him.

When a mechanic is talking about your car and holding up a piston it’s not a good sign.

You and Humble Mechanic have been monumental in my Volkswagen journey and I cannot thank you enough for it! It's because of him I learned how to disassemble VW interiors and TDI troubleshooting through you. Really, thank you so much! <3

>common VW issues
fortunately they helpfully circle the cause of those problems on both the front and back of the vehicle.

Not that I’ve seen. I haven’t watched EVERY video of his either. But I will say that it is exceedingly rare for old cars in general to roll through a dealer’s door. Usually, right after the warranty is up, the cars stop coming in. Every independent shop is charging significantly less per hour on labor than the dealer, most customers figure this out and stop going. So, yeah, seems to be pretty rare.
Most of Charles’ personal fleet as far as I know is all water cooled. The oldest thing I think I’ve seen him feature as his own personal car is a modified Mk3 (93 to early 99 era) GTI VR6.
He’s probably a lot like me and fairly carburetor averse. We didn’t grow up with it, we don’t ‘get it’ as easily and frankly, modern fuel injection is much less of a hassle.
Then again, 1980s VWs are like a bastardization of both. Oddball mechanical fuel injection that almost no one fully understands how to properly dial in. lol
I had a 89 GTI 16V with CIS-E at one point... it was a lot of fun... when the car decided oddball idle and low RPM hesitations were not for today.
*When* everything was happy, it was the single most responsive to my right foot I think I’ve experienced any car. That made it a joy... but that wasn’t every day... it had moods. lol

Ah, yes. I’m also very carb-averse. I have one and I still
hate them so much.
