The old guy across the street backed into the Jankwagen last night and caved the front fender in. Im out of the countru I won’t be back home for 3 more weeks . He left a note on it and Mrs. Snuze spoke with him today, he apparently wants to pay to have it fixed but doesn’t want to get insurance involved.

Words cannot describe how angry I am at the moment. Its probably for the best that Im a thousand miles away and have a few weeks to cool off.

Any DC area oppos have any good body shop recommendations? The guy I used to use passed away a few years ago and I don’t know of anyone else.

Yeah. Honestly, I feel kind of bad for him. And conflicted. I know he didnt mean to do if, it was an accident, and I think he will make it right. But I also think hes 80 some odd years old, and doesn’t want to get insurance involved because they will drop him. But I also wonder if he should even be driving?

What are replacement part costs like on a car like that? I can’t imagine they’re common or easy to get ahold of...

Carbon fiber replacement fenders aren’t cheap.

No idea on cost, but Volvo built about eleventy billion of these things. They are basically roaches. I don’t think body parts have fallen into unobtanium yet.

What Im more worried about is any damage to the underlying structure, because that could screw up the strut tower which in turn will mess up the caster and camber, etc.

Love these guys:

http://www.fairfaxcollisionspecialist.com

Sorry to hear that happened. These guys are who USAA sends us to. They fixed my wife’s old crv, her current pilot, and my old gti (only one of those was our fault) . Great work each time. Fair prices, good advice.

Ive heard good things about Wagon works, but no experience.

What a pisser. Something like that wouldn’t have happened on my driveway, y’knwamsayn? And why couldn't he hit the rear end and save you from fixing the janky metal work there, it surely would've come in handy. OTOH, I bet his car has likely crumbled like foil from the impact.

Too bad I can’t help with the body shop search; I know a few very good places, but they’re all located up this way.

Thanks for the advice and tips. I emailed Auto Scandia. They dont do body work, but are a Volvo specialist, I was hoping they could recommend a shop. We have USAA too and they recommended Caliber and another shop I can’t remember off the top of my head. My wife called them to report the incident, but didnt escalate it for the time being.

Good news is I found multiple fenders on eBay, they seem to run $200-300. Better news, for $370 I could import a pair of widebody fenders from Sweden...

Actually he drives a bunch of old cars, I think my wife said he hit it with his Lincoln Mk VII and the impact didn’t do squat to that boat.

Oh well, the Volvo ans I shall persevere. Unless the front subframe is totally bonkes.  On the flip side, if its good, I found widebody fenders in Sweden for $370....

They commonly don’t want insurance to know. Just remember, in case you didn’t already know, that your contract, and his, almost certainly require you to report an accident even if you don’t file a claim.

I think caliber was one of the options for me as well, can’t recall why we went elsewhere. I’ll ask the Mrs and see if she remembers. But good luck!

The one thing you might run into is old paint. They’ll have to blend the new panel in, but if you got paint issues on adjacent panels you’re going to have to make some decisions (don’t blend, or respray).

But hell yes its wide body time!

Mrs. Snuze informed our insurance, so its currently “report” status meaning they know and aren’t going to pursue anything unless we ask them tom. They suggested she file a police report to get it on record in case he doesn’t pay.

Oh, yiissss, flared fenders would look very nice.

I gotta say, though, maybe you should park a rock out front instead of a brick. Boats don't like rocks, as you should know.

Thanks!

The paint on the car is not great, but for now its servicable. M y long term plan was to respray it eventually, after I addressed some of the other jank . Honestly, if I can just get a decent, non rusty fender on there for now, Ill be happy, even if its the wrong color. Thats just drift cred .

Im half tempted to not even do anything and just hang one myself when I get home but Id feel better having a pro look at it to make sure the underlying structure isn’t compromised. And as much as I want this to be made right, Im not going to bilk my neighbor to sink gobs of money into a $1500 car.  If the repairs are going to be crazy expensive, I may just take what I want off it, junk it, and have him pay me the difference, then start hunting for another one.  But I hope it doesnt come to that.

Thanks. My wife works in law enforcement and shes very smart (like, I have no idea why she puts up with me). I trust her to do t he right thing in my absence. Im just trying to research and send some emails to find a shop I want to have it taken to.

Im tempted to try and fix it myself, but Im worried the underlying structure is compromised. The car was only $1500, so Im not going to bilk my neighbor to sink gobs of cash into a cheap, janky old car. Ill junk it and find anoth er one.  But Id like to see if it would be reasonable to save before I just write it off.

This could have happened to anyone. I've paid for accidents out of pocket before. I don't like getting insurance involved unless I have too. I wouldn't feel too bad for him, but I also wouldn't be too hard on him either.

On the one hand, he left a note. It sounds automatic, but I assure you it is not.

On the other hand, how the fuck do you miss a giant silver car-shaped thing and back your car into an area meant for parking as opposed to turning the wheel some more to keep your own vehicle in the street where driving cars drive?

That sucks, but it really looks like it’s just the exterior sheet metal, and not likely to have damaged anything below the surface.

One the other hand, that’s not likely to be a color you’ll find in the junkyard . I’ve seen exactly two other 240s of any flavor in that color - and one of those is my ‘87 244DL.

This reminded me that my old neighbor backed into my wife’s cavalier with their Aztek. They never bothered to tell us. But there was a dent in the passenger side front door, with yellow paint in it that matched a scuff on   their bumper.

We had already replaced the Cavalier with her Fit, and were selling it cheap so it absolutely wasn’t worth making them pay for it. Just ticked me off that they didn’t tell us.

And now as a delivery driver, and no  longer their neighbor they don’t tip worth a damn. Usually less than 2 bucks. Figures.

As if the police in any major city will show up to a damaged parked car the same day. Took around twelve hours to show up to my bros house after a break in.  They completely stopped responding to non injury accidents in Tucson years ago.

Is your car a stock color? If so, I may know a guy in Michigan who might have parts, or access. He also paints, so if it is a stock color he could probably be talked into doing that too. It wouldn’t match, but it would get you close. Here is the inside of one. From what I recall there is just a liner inside, nothing else.

Kinja'd!!!

Here is one in Elkton, MD for $67. Not the right color, but it’s the right price.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pickup-Only-1986-93-Volvo-240-Right-Front-Pass-Side-Fender-Drk-Blue-OR-Burgundy-/152210918353?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

I’m a dumbass, that’s the right fender. Maybe you can get that old goat to back into the passenger side and then you could get a great deal!

Thanks, this us such a huge help. Im out of town for work - internet is almost non-existent here, mosquitos are tearing me up, and its about to rain, so I dont have work. Ill deal with this when I get back, but my wife already got the insurance involved, which I specifically asked her not to do. But she was going go talk to the guy today and instead caught him rooting around in the car. He said he was looking for the cars info so he could order new parts. So she called the cops. At this point I don’t blame her and back her 100%.

But I'll just deal with the shit when I get home.

Well I was going to take the easy route, but today she caught him out rooting around in the car. He said he was trying to get the cars info so he could order replacement parts. Number one rule - hippity hoppity stay the fuck off my property. So she turned around, called in the accident to the police, told the cops about him tresspassing in the car, and got the insurance involved. Im not happy about this escalating but at this point, I don’t care.

Well the new development is she was going to go talk to him today and instead caught him rooting around in the car. He said he was trying to get the info so he could order replacement parts. She was going to let it go and let me handle it like I requested but instead she called in the accident, told the police about the trespassing, and got insurance involved.  Im not happy about the escalation but at this point, screw him.

Well, that was the plan until she was going to go talk to him today, and instead caught him rooting around in the car. He said he was trying to get the info so he could order the replacement part. She called the police with the accident report and told them about him tresspassing, though didnt press charges, but she escalated things with insurance.

I still won't be home for 3 weeks so Ill just deal with it then.  But in the meantime, screw him.
