It’s cool that they’ve brought back horizontal lights. All the Zs had ‘em before the 350.

Kinja'd!!!

But that decklid bage? That line through the Z? Yes some of the older Zs had these - every Z has had a unique Z logo. But they always got more and more modern, as the car was always meant to be a properly modern sports car.

Maybe this is trying too hard to grab at that history for marketing reasons. Maybe it’s more of a retro car than a modern take on sports car. And that’s a bit sad.

I would’t worry too much about the logo. It wont be the Fairlady in the U.S.

I think it’s gorgeous. Not as gorgeous as the original 240Z, but close. The aspect of the design that I find so appealing is the clean lines and simplicity. There are no brake ducts, no creases, no ridiculous wing, it’s just a sublime, simple, clean design.  There was a side by side shot with a yellow Supra on the front page and the difference in aesthetic is glaring. The Supra is an abomination while this is a properly classy looking car. I wish I could get a better sense of the scale as compared to the current (ugly and bulbous) 370Z and other cars in it’s class.

I agree with this take.  I am considering holding off a new car purchase, saving some more, and possibly getting one next year.

Not a fan of the mouth, but the new Z is worlds better looking than the Supra, and I like the Z32 rear.   Such an improvement from the unhappily styled current model.

I can appreciate the sentiment. A new bespoke model and Z badge may have been welcomed , but at the same time though without someone wanting to hark back to the older days I think the car would have become even bigger.

I think the throwback is the only reason it at least looks smaller than the predecessors. If we have to put up with the cheesy stuff that comes with that I’m all for it. It took the mustang a few generations, but I think the new ones look great. For us to get to this point it required that pretty bland looking throwback in the 2000's.

I hope this does well and they continue to flatten it down and proportion the body lines to get some of that old school deep dish  ZG vibe and maybe reintroduce the remake of the 510.

They stayed with one design language like before, unlike the last 10-20  years that cars have lines, bumps, angles, curves.... like what Toyota and Honda are doing.

And the result is a gorgeous retro/future meld that really works, to my eye.  Sure the grille may need some work, but that’s a small fix.

That sounds fun.  I’m going to drive my wagon til the new wheels fall off and then get a V90.

I really have no idea what I want or what I’ m going to do, but this is one option. I’m about to go on a 23 day work trip. When I get back I’m planning to sell my Cruze and/or 850 and then buy something. I’ m sure youll see lots of ranting and raving posts from me around that time.

Don Beyer Volvo has a nice black V90 with black/grey tweed(?) Seats and it is gorgeous. I saw it when I went to get the special, magical suspension bolts for the 850.

If I had one I’d prefer “Fairlady” to “400Z. ”

I doubt we’ll see the Fairlady nameplate in the US unless Nissan changes their mind. Also, I think the retro badge could be a first-year-only-special- edition before it shifts to a modern evolution.

Same. I think my budget is about half of what that V90 was.

I don’t know if Im going to get another Volvo for a daily, I’ve got the 245 to tear into for my Swede fix . But maybe if I find the right thing.  R ight now Im wide open to possibilities.

Well. 400Z is objectively a bad name if you care about logic.

But most people don’t. I think they’ll sell more in America if they call it 400Z, so that’s probably what they’ll do.

2020 is full of terrible anachronisms. This is one that I wholeheartedly support.

Haha! Even today’s Datsun, which has been repurposed for use in emerging markets?

Hey if it means we get a TT V6 Z for $10k AUD...

I see what you’re saying. I think they could’ve made a modern yet smaller car, like how the MX5 got a bit smaller lately and the Alpine A110 is modern but definitely not big. It would’ve still been more 240Z than 370Z in its dimensions, but I think they could pull that off without going as retro as they did.

Good point about the Mustang. Not a fan of those retro ones, but they got somewhere pretty good. Sadly the Z doesn’t have that sort of staying power, if this generation doesn’t stick there’s a good chance there won’t be another to refine it.

Bring on the 510 :)

Good point, bringing up the Supra. I reckon it’s ugly, but next to this it’s gotta be even more so. And for this to be so clean in the current age is sort of a revelation.

True enough. But it will have the Z with the stripe through it I imagine

In some ways that’s true to form ;) The Z has always been trying to sell well in America, and for the most part it has. It was never the poster child that the Supra and RX7 were, but buyers loved it for that.

Only for the anniversary editions hopefully, but yeah. They’ll probably go all out with the decals if the 370z is any indication.

I agree there are very well made modern small sports cars, but many like the A110, the 4C and FR-S are remakes/homage etc. I think there in lies the problem. Without using “history, throwback, retro, or homage” I imagine it is hard to get corporate to green light a smaller sports car project and those are  just unfortunately the magic words needed. Once the words are used then you have to follow specific styling cues.

I mean the Z model is over 50 years now, darn near continuous during the whole time. It is the affordable option next to the GT-R which is a good place to be, they just have to make it refined enough to justify at their pricepoint or strip it down and make it an option for the average person. I’m definitely hoping this sets the trend. Only time will tell.
