I figured out what the Z Proto's face reminds me of

I have this thing where I have freakish recall of faces. Sometimes I see a person and have a spidey sense like, “I HAVE SEEN THIS FACE BEFORE.” For example, this came into play when I interviewed for my current job. One of my now-coworkers who was on my video interview looked so familiar, but it took a couple weeks into starting the job for me to realize he goes to my gym. I HAD SEEN HIS FACE BEFORE.

Apparently my superpower extends to faces on things other than humans, because this picture of the Z Proto triggered my familiar face reflex. I was picturing some kind of cartoon, a character with a round head and a square-edged mou th like a nutcracker. I tried googling for images of things like “smiling yellow robot” and whatnot. Finally it dawned on me where I had seen this face before. It’s how The Oatmeal draws faces, like in his !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

The Z Proto is a character in an Oatmeal comic about why the Supra should have a stick shift.

sriracha belongs on everything. but not sushi. the meme even says it, any animal that has passed through death AND FIRE. Sushi is (usually) raw and should have wasabi.

I’m fairly certain the shape of the grille was inspired by the original. It’s just...they seem to have focused more on having it be a callback to the original than making the design of the new one actually cohesive.

But even that design had a nice chrome bar to break up the otherwise giant open rectangle. It just comes off as lazy on the new Z, like an eBay bodykit. It looks like someone booleaned a rectangle and beveled the edges in AutoCad before sending the design into production.

Overall I like it, but t he grille is...not popular. The effect of the super blocky shape of the grille on the pointy front end of a generally round, sloping design is a bit jarring. Yeah the original and 350 have similar grille shapes but they flow better with the overall styling of the cars they’re part of.
