For some reason recirculate is on the vent selection dial , so you don’t have your choice of vents if you want recirculation. Also the Off should be on the fan speed dial. It’s just wrong over here.
Ford does/used to do something similar by putting AC on the vent dial instead of just having a button to engage it.

Boy this is totally FUBAR’d ....what brand vehicle is this , so I can avoid it thoroughly

I have a hybrid of old and new in my truck. I have the standard Ford dial with the A/C and MAX A/C settings, but there’s also separate buttons for A/C and Recirc so you can have them on whichever vent setting you want. *sings* AND I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN...

Little things like that have removed vehicles as options for me in the past. I grew up with Japanese vehicles and generally most domestic controls really irk me because of it. That being said, I now drive an AMC Eagle and Dodge Rampage, both solidly from the 80's, both with controls on the dash that I prefer on stalks... So I guess I’m mostly over it now. BUT, I still hate modern GM light selector “switches” and their steering wheel control layouts; vehemently despise them and all they stand for.

At least you got a recirculating icon. Panel, Floor and Defrost recirculate.

Is that from a Chrysler product? It looks identical to the HVAC controls on Mom's KJ.

I violently abhore GM’s cruise control scheme that was used for so long because accel and decel (w hich are similar functions) were two completely different types of control, a momentary switch and a button respectivly.

Wow that is terrible.
My Jaguar has only temp dial and fan Low Hi Auto. It’s fully automatic vent selector and runs the AC or recirculated when it pleases. The whole thing runs off vacuum pneumatics selected by an elaborate servo operated cam wheel contraption.
Incredibly it actually works pretty well for 1985.

My BMW has a toggle button for each vent instead of a selector dial, so you can have any combination you want. It’ll even do dash/defrost or floor/dash/defrost, which are offerings I’ve never seen on another car.

My Jeep is crippled in a different way: I can’t use both top and bottom vents unless I want to use A/C (and I almost never, ever want to use A/C).

My MINI and Volvo have that but the Auto is quite good so I seldom take it off that.
My SAAB has a sorta similar thing but you have to push two buttons at once and I think it only allows certain combinations.
I like the idea of the old BMW ones where there’s levers for floor, panel and defrost and you can adjust each individually

My Neon didn’t allow any odd combos but it had stops in between so you could do things like “mostly floor , some panel ”
Al so for some reason for AC you crank the fan dial the other way instead of just having a toggle button.

JDM for life Yo! Same goes for headlight and wiper operation. I always assumed it was standard how those things worked having owned a Honda, Mazda, and Subaru. And also driven plenty of Hyundais, Nissans, and Toyota. Then I had a damn domestic rental Ford and couldn't for the life of me operate the lights or wipers. Good thing it wasn't dark nor raining!

My Volvo’s blower vibrates horribly at high speeds (presumably a bad bearing, but I’ve seen enough JRitS posts to wonder if there’s a long-dead animal in there), so while I use the “Auto” function, I then immediately have to dial the fan back (which does work fine). Probably should fix it, but replacement looks expensive and painful enough that I keep putting it off (hopefully it doesn’t fail sometime when I need the defroster).

I had forgotten the HVAC control layout from my wife’s Neon. Thanks for the reminder!
You’re right, the funkiest thing about that layout was the a/c control integrated into the fan. It’s one of the strangest decisions selectors I’ve seen. It always made me wonder if the a/c compressor kicked on when the defroster was selected like it’s supposed to or if I had to put it on a/c with defrost and turn the temperature to hot. I rarely drove that car, so I never figured it out.

You people and your knobs and buttons. Just wait until you have to go through touchscreen menus or memorize voice commands to get to it.

New (2018+) Ford F-150s also have individual vent buttons and allow selection of all three positions at once.

My S10 is like that. Max A/C is recirculate , but A/C is outside air with other vent settings.

One thing I love on the volt is I can put foot, head and defrost on at the same time, and a let down when I can’t in other cars.

When the day comes that I touch a screen for HVAC controls, I’ll think back on the miata with the most rose colored glasses. Sweet and simple.

I find this funny because I actually like GM’s old stalk design. Because every function feels different, I find it really easy to operate without looking. It just worked and kept everything out of the way.

Some cars don’t give you the choice because they use one of the regular vents for the recirc intake. For example, in my Cruze the foot vent is the recirc intake, so you can have recirc + air at your face and/or windshield, or no-recir but air at your feet and face or windshield. If you try to select feet with recirc on, it turns recirc off.
But here’s the fun part - at some point the relay that controls some of the internal valves to lineup for recirc broke in the Cruze . So now I can have recirc on and air directed to my feet. Since it was never meant to work this way, when I go in that lineup, nothing happens. W hatever temp air I select just sort of slowly leaks out of all the vents, regardless of fan speed.
