I get 16, but waited too late in the year to plan things out (with COVID restrictions, there didn't seem to be much worth doing), now I'm not sure I'll be able to figure out a way to use them all. Especially since November and December are so holiday heavy to begin with. I think I can see a way to use 6 days in December, but I'll still have another 5 to work in somewhere. My fault for not liking the idea of taking time off for the sake of it, I like to have something to "do" , and working around the house or watching TV just don't qualify, frankly I'd rather be at work if that's the alternative.

What would people say is the norm for non-mandatory vacation in the US? 0 weeks? Two weeks?

Curious as to what our American friends usually get as part of their compensation packages

T wo weeks (10 days) is standard for most office jobs. As you move up in most companies you get bumped up to 3 or even 4 weeks.

If you are an hourly employee you almost never get any paid vacation.

Our system is broken.

Seems like 2 weeks + 10 holidays + sick time is standard beginning (young worker, no experience) for many positions (not low-wage hourly, which often have no paid vacation).

Then, with time - 3 weeks, then 4, then maybe 5 or 6.

For the brief time that I had a salary job I had 5 paid vacation days, and Iirc you go an additional one every year you worked for the company.

So, according to this, after 35 years, of loyally working 50 hours a week,  you’d have as a McDonald’s frycook in Spain.

What he said. I got 10 days when I started and 15 days when I hit 5 years 20 when I hit 10 years. I consider myself really lucky for that. We start at 15 now, we have more than doubled in size since I joined.

Also I’m part of a group allowed “flex time” which basically means as long as I pick up the phone, no one cares where I am...the trick is no one tells you when it’s not ok to take “flex time”...you gotta play “ the game” and be good at it. luckily (or unfortunately) depending on how you look at it, I’m good at it.

You have to have a full time, usually salary, job before you get any kind of paid vacation. Then it’s usually 1 week to start and grows if you continue to work for the company.

I think that’s pretty common.

I think I can see a way to use 6 days in December, but I’ll still have another 5 to work in somewhere.

Simple solution: Take monday off for 5 weeks in a row.

So many 3 day weekends!

My fault for not liking the idea of taking time off for the sake of it, I like to have something to “do” , and working around the house or watching TV just don’t qualify, frankly I’d rather be at work if that’s the alternative.

There is something worthwh ile about taking a day off just to work on a project or repair  you have been avoiding.

You get the benefit of the job getting done, the knowledge that you literally have all day to do it, and it’s nice to break the routine every now and then.

I’m at 208 hrs of PTO/year. That’s a combination of sick and paid vacation, not including holidays. I think I have 9 paid holidays so total of 280 hrs of paid leave/year. I typically use about 2-3 week of my PTO/year.

Where I work, you start with 19 days PTO that you can use for sick leave or vacation time - your choice.  The amount increases with tenure and after 10 years you have 29 days.  I can’t complain.  :)

Kinja'd!!! ranwhenparked > CobraJoe
09/15/2020 at 14:52

Kinja'd!!!0

Eh, maybe, I’m not really one to do that. I don’t have issues getting shit done on weekends, plus afternoons when the sun’s out. Also, my company gives us a half day off all summer on Friday, which is nice, but it also means that taking a 3 day weekend only uses 1/2 a day of vacation. My problem this year was “saving” my days to wait and see if there’d be anything worth doing later in the year (temporary 2 week shutdown to preserve hospital capacity, turned into 3 month stay home order, turned into we’ll open most things up, but not the sort of things you’d take time off work to do - you can get your teeth cleaned, hair cut, and go to the dry cleaners, but 90+% of fun/entertainment stuff is closed or canceled). For the longest time, things were just being “postponed” to later in the year, so a wait and see approach seemed to make some sense.

As long as Florida doesn't shut down again, looks like I can at least take my normal Christmas/New Year vacation to either Coral Gables or Key West.

Also, one mistake I made was quitting and coming back in a little over a year later - I had accr ued 20 days, but didn’t get all my seniority back.

Kinja'd!!! Jb boin > Tripper
09/15/2020 at 14:55

Well, in here you only have 2.08 days per months but it’s if you are at the stan dard 35h/week, if you do 37 or 39h/week you can have additional (half) days (something like additional 10 days at most).

And there are many non working (but paid) holidays, for example, there a 9 during weekdays in 2020, one that is a Saturday and two Sundays (not to mention that in most jobs, working one of these days is paid sensibly more, as well as Sundays , if you have to work a day that is both it could be 200% the normal wage).

I just used 60 hrs and I still have 165 in the bank. They stop roll over around 320 hrs I think. I tend to take lots of 1/2 or single days off in the winter for skiing and Fridays in the summer for bike ridding. I guess my point is I don’t take a lot of extended vacations like >1 week but tend to take a lot of 1 to 1/2 days. It’s extremely difficult for me to use it all.

Washington state is pretty progressive as far as benefits go, and just in the past few years they’ve enacted a mandatory paid sick leave that accrues at a rate of 1 hour per week. So 6.5 days of paid sick leave per year, employer can choose whether or not to allow it to   be used as PTO, does not roll over.

We’re pretty backwards.

I’ve been at my company just shy of six years and I get a standard 5 weeks (not including the holidays) plus some rollover if I didn’t use them the previous year. That’s PTO so it covers vacations/sick days etc. That’s considered very good, especially for not having been here that long.

Canada is pretty decent in that 2 weeks is standard and most good workplaces will start you at 3 weeks (like my company).

I’m currently on 5 weeks and if I stick around for another 5 years (which is very possible) I’ll be at the maximum of 6 weeks. You could potentially get even more with compressed schedules and such but I’m find with a regular 35 hour work week.

5 weeks, though, is enough for me to take a nice, international trip and still have time leftover for additional long weekends here and there. Now that I have it, I could never settle for less.

Yeah, I get that. You just have to find someone like-minded who wants you to succeed, and is willing to let you earn your ownership in the company. Maybe three of your best, most-trusted clients in a 4-way partnership with you? I don’t know... maybe too many cooks in the kitchen. Maybe one partner is best.
