I had been scheduled to fly into Gulfport, MS
for work midday Tuesday, but got a phone call a little bit ago telling me to cancel it. Not one to second-guess “hey don’t travel” I did so, then found this when cur
ious why
. I guess that startup has been postponed.
Blue X is where I was to be arriving late morning/midday Tuesday
Probably a good call (while part of me kind of would want to be there for the experience of “being in a hurricane” I don’t want t
o be
flying into it
)
.

I’ve been uncomfortably close to tornadoes, and experienced two very minor earthquakes, so I suppose a hurricane should be on my todo list.
I will, however, take a pass on wildfires; I once had the opportunity to photograph a controlled burn of a prairie, and that was quite enough.

Yeah, that’s a solid no thanks!

So far, I’ve been through: a hail storm, a couple of tornadoes , multiple hurricanes, several floods, a wild fire, and a minor earthquake (no damage). The floods are the most unnerving. You see the water rising and there’s not much you can do about it. Sometimes the water is rising and the skies are sunny. Out of all of them, it was one of the tornadoes that did the most damage to my property. The wildfire was the only disaster I could actively fight. It passed across our property just west of my house. I managed to save my neighbor’s house from burning, but they did lose a lot of their fence. I guess I can add pandemic to that list now, right?

Imagine the worst thunderstorm you’ve experienced, then turn the rain sideways and keep it there for several hours. If you’re lucky, the power will stay on. Our worst experience was with Gustav when the power was out at our house for two weeks.

“ the experience of “being in a hurricane””
Please remove this from any of your bucket lists.
Especially the batshit crazy list.

As a young and stupid 18 year old I was volunteering as a firefighter; our old International fire truck grenaded the trans in front of a prairie fire with 50 mph winds; luckily a local rancher was there with his tractor to pull us behind the firebreak!

A long time ago, we were
driving through eastern
Oregon and heard a call for volunteers on the car radio. So we stopped and helped with a forest fire. It’s not too bad when it’s going through prairie - it’s almost cute, I felt like you could stomp on it few times and put it out.
We spent a few hours helping dig a fire line. No, I would not want to be anywhere near it if/when it reaches forest.

Once it’s over, you can add pandemic for a gold star. From your list, it sounds like
you should consider moving! ;) You don’t have volcano, tsunami,
and
asteroid on your bucket list.
Milwaukee was pretty safe from everything (only on the
edge of tornado alley). I seemed to have gone the wrong way moving to CO.

I was in Yosemite during some of the huge fires there in 2017 and have lived in the bay area since 2013. F- wildfires.

My list came from four states! To my surprise, the tornado that hit our house happened after we moved out of tornado alley. The flood that came through our house happened in Texas. Our losses were small because it was a rental. The wildfire, hail storm, and a couple of tornadoes happened when I lived in Oklahoma. Arkansas was fairly quiet, but we’ve been through a couple of floods, a couple of hurricanes, and a tornado in Louisiana.

Stay safe.
This one surprised me as I hadn’t been watching the news much and this afternoon our work sent out an email saying they’re closing the New Orleans branch.

I’m flying into Atlanta o n Tuesday to drive to Alabama for work on Wednesday.

If the customer hadn’t cancelled the startup I’m pretty sure I’d be doing the same thing, driving from ATL to Mississippi

WI is anything but safe from an earthquake and there are certainly bad tornadoes. The fault line in IL is worse than anything in CA.

Now I’m feeling like it’s you. Y
ou did something horrible (could be in a past life so
you don’t remember
it
) and now
have bad karma following you around. Leave those poor states alone!

As someone who relies on refining companies for most of my work, I’m happy some people like you are flying. But as someone who also has traveled for half of my 20 years career, I have to ask what kind of business are you in to fly for work these days?

Environmental consultant for commercial lending. People like me are all over the country so I don’t understand why I need to fly anywhere but if a pandemic didn’t regionalize us I guess nothing will. I just go where I’m told. Which is Texas right now and then farther east in a couple days!

Interesting. My wife is in environmental as well, and by brother in law works for an environmental consulting company, but they do industrial (chemical plants and oil and gas stuff), not commercial. Glad you are still employed and your clients are spending money into the economy. Travel safe!

And don’t move to Colorado!
Please!

Spent three hours walking around outside in this. That was...fun.
