I’m in an online class right now, from 6-8pm central time. I missed my kid’s bedtime so they could teach me how to use an Architectural scale on a shaky blurry webcam.

I have an Architecture degree. I don’t need this crap. But here I am, with my camera live so they can see I’m at my computer “paying attention”

I guess it’s better than spending three days away from home in Milwaukee this summer for the same thing, but gadamn  this is boring.

I went through some training a couple of weeks ago. The software we used monitored which software was active, so they could see if we were looking at email, working on a document, etc. What they DIDN’T plan for was my iPad being right in front of me. :)

Hang in there. Even better, find and point out an error and say something like, “when I was in architectural school, they taught us this one neat trick....”

Could you run the software in a virtual machine? Then it could not see what you are doing.

I had a 1 hour lecture on adapting HVAC to the new bullshit. I just visited a potential pre-school for my son and they had 0 fucking air flow in the room. 0. no fans, ducts, grills, inlets, outlets. nothing. I think they mentioned in the lecture as that being the worst case  scenario but in some sort of joke that you’ll never see that any more.

Fortunately, no one at my school is yet interested in paying attention to whether or not I am paying attention. In fact, even in the professional CE webinars my wife runs for engineers they don’t have time for that garbage. They have a quiz and a challenge question that you have to answer correctly to prove you were there.

BTW, you wouldn’t believe how many engineers email my wife asking for the answer to the challenge question.

I did also point out that something they have us doing is never done in practice, and way harder than it needs to be.

I had an outdoors in person meeting last Tuesday that was supposed to be 8:30 -12:00. My manager arrived half an hour late. Every one was gone before noon, except myself and my manager. My schedule had yet to be completed. We go inside to the conference and hammer it out for 2 hours.

Next day, my schedule is not ready. I call my manager and request to meet. Not available, still in pajamas. Asks if we can go over schedule again on phone. I oblige, for another 1.25 hours.

Next day, I have not received my schedule. I call again and am asked to meet at the office. Arrive at 10:15, manager arrives shortly after. Manager want to go over eve rything again. This takes until 1: 00.

Next day no schedule.  I call my manager, who tells me there are changes being made.  I call department manager..... who tells me nothing has been finalized.  Later that day I receive a text telling me we are delaying another week, only me, no one else........

I know how to use an architect’s scale mostly (I mean it’s exactly what it sounds like) and I’m halfway through one semester of online school. What you need is a 15 minute loop to play on repeat haha. That’s not a good use of time.

I get the purpose of them but they have never been very effective for me as I usually have to drag the conversation along by the scruff of its neck.

They're very hit or miss. I've found them to be much more effective if you give the group a structure of specific things to talk about/do. I don't use them often though.

For instance, breakout rooms in math lectures they give everyone a problem and enough time to 10 of them. I take charge by sharing my screen with the WS so I can actually go through them all and learn stuff but I am sure the majority of groups just do nothing at all. You have to make sure you balance the time with a structured list of things to go through as many as possible, which is difficult.
