I need a) a garage and b) nicer riding roads.

I agree with everything he’s saying there.

My garage has a 1971 CB500 four and a 2015 CB500x. They are very different bikes and the 1971 has much higher build quality but as he says the brakes are definitely more of a suggestion.

Even though the 2015 bike starts every time I ask it with zero maintenance it’s not the one I think about selling...

Should have compared it with the CB400F Super Sport, the first street bike I ever rode. I was 13 years old, and for me, at the time, it was a rocket ship. It belonged to m y friend Ron, he was a few years older. We rode dirt bikes together with other friends. Ron would routinely do wheelies while passing the schoo l bus on his way home in the afternoon.

It’s kind of an interesting assertion. I’m not sure I’m 100% in agreement because I know I can find some new old stock 250-300cc for around $3-4k Canadian still sitting at dealers. They might not have the new paint colour, minor upgrades,  or revised style but it’s still brand new, save maybe the odd demo .

The 300 class new and used is what the majority of riders under 25 seem to be starting out before they bump up to the mid weights after a year or two. I still think people are willing to shell in terms of bang for buck if the yesteryear R3 and now Kawa 400 are indicators.

Those are amazing bikes.  I love those honda SOHC 4 bikes and have always wanted one of the 400s.

Opened my eyes to a whole new level of performance.  My friend Ron had some cool stuff, but that little 400F was the most exciting for me.

I’m avoiding buying another old bike. Mainly because of the hassle I’ve had with my 83 xt200. It runs and rides fine, but it has lots of electrical problems And those drum brakes do suck .

However if I could buy that Xt200 brand new for 3k, yeah I’d do that. Maybe with the addition of electric start.

The old one is definitely prettier

I see what the new one is going for, and I would likely get a CB as a first bike (what a coincidence!), but you’re right. The old one just looks right. The new one just feels... I don’t know, but I think it’s summed up by the digital instrument cluster.

Yeah I don’t consider digital clusters a feature. I’d rather have easy to read, aesthetically pleasing,  analog gauges

Back in the day, it was prac tically a street legal race bike. That factory 4 into 1 megaphone really looked the part.

I feel like the bigger CB650r pulls the design language off much better

The most beautiful exhaust headers in motorcycling. Still kicking myself for passing up the opportunity I had to buy one of these little gems in the mid-90s, for short money.

Hindsight always reminds us of the mistakes we made. Armed with the information I have now, I rea lize how many many times I have messed up on buying and selling. The good thing to remember is that they are out there, and they will never lose value.

That exhaust was a spectacular sight, and most certainly the inspiration for many aftermarket exhausts, especially this 6 into 1 CBX system:
