In this episode, I’m going to go over my engine, note everything I see wrong with it, and then check all the head studs to see if they’ve pulled out of the case. If they pulled out, things will get pretty expensive.
Join me as I stumble along rebuilding the drivetrain of my 77 Porsche 911S. To be honest, I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve never owned an aircooled car before this one, there’s a huge learning curve, and I’ve been avoiding this since I bought the car years ago. I can’t afford to pay 911 prices on things, so I’ll be doing as much of the work myself as possible. Although the car ran and drove okay, the amount of leaking, smoking, and general neglect of the drivetrain finally needs to be addressed.

Nice stuff, man. That head stud had me going for a minute, glad it and others were just loose and that it’s already got case savers. I need to pull the motor out of my SC for the same checks and reseal work, it’s also a beater budget project that I’ve spent more time working on than driving. I’m also a VW/Audi nerd in addition to that so I’m h appy to find you here. Gonna check out the other vids, keep it up.

My heart sank completely, as it started calculating the expenses of what I just started... and then COMPLETELY STOKED! I like a bit of everything; if I had a bigger garage I’d probably find a way to fill it, but yeah, VW/Audis are especially awesome. Really want to build a S port Q uattro replica, someday. Imagine driving one all winter...

Are you keeping the CIS ? What exhaust will you go with? If I didn’t have CA smog I’d lose the stock exhaust posthaste. Need to piece together some used headers and just swap the exhaust every two years to keep the heat down. Mine is a gray market ’82, was never really supposed to have a Cat so it runs it hot .
I’d love an SQ build, lots of great dirt roads out here, if not snow ;) My old UrQ and 4000Q were beasts on dirt with the diffs locked. I’ve got a project/parts UrS4 that needs to donate its motor to something, wish I still had the 4000 to swap.
