Saw one of these the other day. Having a lot of camping fantasies laterly (is currently illegal here like everything else) and this certainly set me off.
We don’t quite have the truck culture of America down under, but we have something else. Every young man worth his salt has a lifted Hilux/Navara/Triton with muddies he’ll take out into the bush to prove himself. Sometimes it’s an old Patrol or Landcruiser.
I think a (factory) lifted, AWD, old Japanese van is cooler. Almost as capable, but with more sunroof, more sleeping room. Also it’s weird. A reminder that once upon a time we had cars of all shapes and sizes - you don’t have to conform to the same boring ass body style your mates have.
Last time I was out we all got showed up by a guy in a Unimog. There’s a lways a bigger fish.
The L400 is surely the better vehicle. But this is about the L300. Enjoy pics
Just quietly, my approach to camping is none of this. I take the MR2, with minimal gear
. I can’t cross a river or traverse a gully, but factory MR2 ride height and careful driving is usually enough.

These are cool and getting to be quite common around me. I saw like 3 on Saturday.

I’m just gonna let people keep importing them to the USA and Canada and maybe one day I will grab one. My wife is not really cool with them, I showed her when I was looking for a wagon, I thought about really looking for one with some awesome graphics.

My friend I work with exports A LOT of those... so if you want one, let me know :)
They are awesome!
Here is one I got before...

Haha! Awesome. There are quite a few in Aus, I don’t think I’d have trouble buying one that’s already been imported :)

Yes!

You’ve got to have graphics. You want it to say CHAMONIX everywhere. Some of them have a CHAMONIX crest on every seat

Here is an L300 Chamonix I spotted about a year ago, it might be right up your alley.
plus a bonus Yota.

That’s sick! Excessive graphics, camping gear, two tone, thicc tyres. 10/10! Not sure if it has the sunroof(s) but I’ll pay it.
Really makes the Tarago look a bit off doesn’t it?

If I ever go back to work I could get some graphics made I suppose. I like these :

Unrelated to the awesome vans but do you have a website that I can go check on? I'm kinda looking at getting at a JZX90/100 next year....

http://amagasakimotor.net/ and https://www.redlineexports.com/ ... but you’re best to just contact me directly flavien dot vidal at this gmail dot com thing. I’ve exported a couple of JZX90 the are a lot of fun... JZX100 won’t really be easily availalbe until late 2021 for the US.... I can store cars indoor for fairly cheap though and most of all, I can source anything you might want here :)

I’m more about the factory ones. But those are still god damn cool.

You’re a legend!
I’ve long fantasised about importing a late model year 300ZX. Or an NSX if possible haha

Thanks!!

Neither are difficult to find :)

You like weird old Japanese vans and choose to camp out of a MR2 with what fits in one. I salute you. If I ever get my Beat, I’ll attempt the same thing
shortly after my wife kicks me out for buying a 25+
yo
kei car

Haha! Well thanks, exquisite tastes etc ;) It leaves me in a weird position in terms of upgrading. Anything that’s even remotely in the realm of performance is either too small (Elise, newer MR2, Beat, S660, Cappuccino) or I wouldn’t take it down a dirt road (NSX, Esprit, Evora, S2000). The MR2 is the only car that can do it all while still being a nippy lightweight MR 2-seater!
A Beat, there’s a challenge! I guess people do hike in to camp sites. If you pack with that in mind you can make it work ;)
Especially if you’ve got no wife filling up valuable cargo space

Some of them do come with a little boot rack.
.
;-)

So they do!
Technically that allows for infinite storage. Sure wish the MR2 had one of those.

Mitsubishi Oz were talking about bringing in a hundred of the latest versions each year under the same low import rules that kept the previous Suzuki Sierra going before the new Jimny ...
![]() 09/01/2020 at 16:50 |

One hundred? I think they used to do that with the Evo. But at such few numbers, what’s the point?
I’m not sure the latest ones are all that good. It’s not the same..
![]() 09/01/2020 at 18:25 |

The point is profit...and that’s perhaps why Mitsubishi hasn't managed to deliver.
![]() 09/01/2020 at 18:58 |

I just thought profit would be slim with the cost of shipping and complying such a small amount. With the Evo you could probably sell them at any price, not sure about the Delica. I remember the Aus-spec Evos commanding twice the price on the used market compared to a grey import, 20k compared to 10 k.
I guess not, since if profit was slim Mitsu would be doing it
![]() 09/02/2020 at 05:03 |

The key of the low import rules is that compliance requirements and therefore costs are reduced. Shipping costs sod all per car when spread across a boatload of cars. And therein might be the problem since (I believe) few of our Mitsubishi’s are made in Japan...
