What: Mountain Hardwear merino wool t- shirt.
Why: the best goddamn piece of clothing I’ve ever owned.
Review: amazing. So comfortable, for so many things, for so long. I put one on Saturday afternoon, hiked, camped, hiked, drove home. C omfortable all day, from 60 degrees to 80+ degrees and wearing a pack. Then I got home and ran 4 miles. It looks good enough to wear casually but can do anything. I’d own and wear nothing but these shirts if possible. So why not?
Cost: 80. Fucking. Dollars. If I was Jeff Bezos, sure. But I cannot fathom spending $80 on a t-shirt. I don’t care if its 100% merino, if it doesn’t come with the actual sheep I’m not paying $80 for a t-shirt. They were on clearance, so I got two for $30 each. They bought 2 or 3 more. I would pay 40 all day for these. I’d struggle at $50, but they’re worth that.
Want to drive cross country? P ut one on, toss another in a bag. Same for a few days in the woods camping. Wear around town all day then out to dinner? Sure, why not? Trail to town? If that’s your phrase. I’m right between small and medium, but either fits nicely.
But don’t pay $80 for a t-shirt. Unless that’s your budget, I guess. But if you see one for less than 50? Buy one or four.

Mountain Hardware generally makes very high quality clothing. I have a rain coat and a mid weight fleece. Both garnets are still going strong after years of use.

So, you’re
gonna let us know when these are on sale again, right?

I’ve gone to wool socks and I won’t go back. Warmer in winter, moisture wicking in summer. Happy feet year round.

Ask and you shall receive. I don’t know I’d pay $60 though...

I only buy smartwool so I can match them easier with washing , I have all kinds of them, all my work socks are mid height mid weight. I got some thin ones for summer but that hasn’t worked out now has it! I just hike in them right now, or I did before the smoke.

My favorite hat was one of theirs, and I mourn it to this day

So worth it.

While $80 is a lot to spend on a t-shirt, if it lasts years and you wear it a lot, it could be money well spent. For example, I just replaced a couple Lacoste polos after a decade of use.

Smartwool is great, but the pair or two of darn tough I have have lived up to their name.

Twenty years ago, I bought a bunch of long sleeved T shirts from Sam’s Club. They were Pluma brand, and they were the best shirts I’ve ever owned. Fit, comfort, sleeve length, all perfect. I wore them until they looked like Swiss cheese and have yet to find a comparable cotton, pocket front T shirt.

I’m like that with shoes. I’ll spend good money on my dress shoes to get ones that are comfortable, and have them re- soled as necessary.

I might have a couple pairs but they are for snow or something, or when the temp drops here, SF area can get a sticky cold, I’m from Hawaii too haha.

Yeah... $30, maybe $40, is more where I’m at.

Honestly, I'd buy 2 more at 40, 3 at 30.

I thought this was going to be a negative review about the Oppo logo washing off.

Smartwool is a very pop ular brand here in Maine. I started getting Cabot & Sons socks, made in Vermont, they have since changed the company name to Darn Tough. Smartwool is much easier to find in retail locations, but theses days, who wants to go into a store for socks?
It was amaz ing how the comfort difference between cotton/synthetic blend was immediately notice able. I’m not sure when wool socks fell out of favor, maybe after WWII, but it must have been part of some sadistic plot to keep people from being active.
At the end of a hard day, your feet are going to thank you for switching.

I like them, I had some kind of teflon socks in the Marines most of the time, I didn’t switch to these until maybe seven years ago. I don’t like to hunt for pairs of socks so I just buy the same ones online with REI or Sierra Traders.

I exclusively wear Lacoste shirts, they last forever, feel great, look good and are breathable

A buddy in California swore by all his mili tary issued cold weather gear, as he commuted by moto r cycle year round. Being originally from Chicago, I figured he must know what good cold weather gear is.
In Maine, most folks go to Reny ’s for Smartwool. It’s a local department store chain with 17 locations. Prices are good, and when the Smartwool goes on sale, it flies out the doors.

I’ve visited the Remy’s in Wells, ME, many times over the years, but only for summer stuff (folks have been renting the same place in Wells Beach since 1978, until this year). Good place; I didn’t realize it wasn’t a one-off.

The Wells store is the one I use too, it’s probably one of the bigger stores. Mostly go on my to or from the beach, but sometimes I make a special trip. It’s a mix of odd lots, top quality brands and local ly made goods that also caters to tourists seasonal needs.
One of the greatest scores I think I made on a particular visit was on dog toys. The identical squea ky toys I was buying at Target for $7 each were $1 at Reny’s. I bought a dozen.

I buy bamboo fiber socks from Danish Endurance, when on sale it cost less than 4€/pair and it’s sensibly better than cotton while almost as durable , not sure how it compares to wool .

Flip-flops, the occasional swim trunks, and beach chairs have been my primary Remy’s shopping.
And squirt guns for my nephew. The el-cheapo ones aren’t good for more than a season, but that’s OK.
Tully’s Beer & Wine in that same plaza is a great place, too.

Interesting. I’m not sure about their ability to keep feet warm, but it sounds like they are good breathing/ wicking socks.
