Of course, the rust is a bit much for someone spoiled by the PNW.

This is a good illustration of why we really don't see old Toyotas in the Midwest. Every single Toyota truck bed looked like this or worse, and that was in like 1992.

If the front were as rusty as the bed, you might be able to attract Mr Tracy, even from the other side of the world.

My first visit to the Midwest last summer showed me people have no problem driving around rust buckets, as long as it’s an American rust bucket.

Oh, we’ll drive anything rusty. Toyota trucks simply rusted faster than the others . Especially the bed. It was not uncommon at all to see a 5-8 year old Toyota truck, with a homemade wooden flatbed. Otherwise the bottom half would be gone, often worse than the one in these pictures.
These days the bodies of trucks all rust about at the same rate. I’d say if any of them rust quicker than the others, it’s the Dodge ... Err ... Rams. When the first gen Tacoma came out, their bodies lasted as long as any others. Body rust hasn’t been a particular issue for them since.
Toyota is still fighting frame rust issues though . My friend has a ‘15 or ‘16 Taco (whichever the is the first year of that body style ), and it was recalled in the spring to inspect it for frame rust. It wasn’t just a visual check, they scanned it with some sort of machine.
Despite that, Toyota trucks have a very loyal fan base here too. That same friend has a new crew cab Taco on order right now. Even back in the 80's, when the beds would dissolve inside of a decade, they still sold plenty of them. We’ll forgive rust around here, it’s a fact of life, if the truck is reliable. Nobody ever questioned that about Toyotas.
The fact is, any Toyota truck ... really any Japanese truck ... made before the mid 90's, is rare as hens teeth around here . M y head whips around as fast as can be when I do spot one, but that’s only about an annual occurance. The exception is the old Toyota based RVs. Nobody drove those in the winter, so there are lots of those around still.
