Perhaps it’s the lack of gas struts, but the 4C’s rear hatch is one heavy boi. It takes both arms to lift it up, but keeping it up to position the prop rod is easy as long as you’re not holding anything else.
This becomes a real problem when you don’t want to drop your groceries on the floor, but that use case has occurred only
once
for me.
S
o what’s it
made of
...a panel of glass which is heavy for sure, plus a beefy frame to support that glass. Attached to all that is the boot cover, which is just SMC. The plastic engine cover has the only “4C” badge visible from outside.
The 4C Spider loses the rear
glass, which means its lid is probably lighter.

That doesn’t have a gas strut? Is that really that much added weight and complexity?

Why the hell didn’t it have struts ? Most modern cars have hatches that lift, and shut themselves, but they couldn’t put in 2lb struts?

Lightness!

I mean....if you find it too heavy, I’ll gladly take the 4C off your hands to give your arms a break...?

probably packaging. would have to mount on that thin section near the vent on the side. Also that white part looks like it isn’t much supported thered have to be a bracket sticking out.

It’s probably due to the need for extra structure to hold the gas struts. There is no traditional roof rail and the engine cradle is too far below. Dedicated tube frame would be needed for what is basically an afterthought.

Oppo logic is always impressive. Have a star!

I think it’s because there is no surrounding structure to mount the struts. Adding dedicated tube frame would be more weight and cost on a car that probably was a net investment loss for FCA.

What can I say, I'm just a considerate guy who likes to help his fellow Oppos :P

Also, they wanted this thin g to be quite light.

Looks like a damn fun car to go shopping in.

Aaaaaand yesterday the store
kerbside pick-up guy
bent the
prop rod by attempting to close the lid. I told him not to try, but I may have been too late.

No! What’s a kerbside pick up guy?

Instead of going into the store to buy stuff (and encounter potential virus carriers
)
, the store brings your pre-ordered
stuff out to you.

Ah, and he was trying to close the lid so you’d think he was doing a good job?
Man. Other people touching your car. No good

Looks like someone needs to make ad on struts for that hatch
