every once in a while the speakers go out in my Focus. When it happens, i t sounds like someone pulled a plug out and makes a kind of thump nois e. If i shut the car off and turn it back on, everything is fine. Whats happening ?

head unit internal fault most likely

The right front speaker on my Explorer would sometimes go out, even after I replaced it. My guess is there was a short in the wire or something.

Have you noticed when it goes out? Is the volume high? Did you drive over a bump? Does it happen on every source or just AM/FM? Does the radio actually go dark or did the sound just dis appear? O n the surface i t sounds like th ere is a short some wh ere in the speaker wires or possibly in the tinsel leads of a speaker itself. The radio going out is possibly the pro tection circuit kicking in . Other strong possibilities include something within the head unit itself taking a shit. Something like the internal amp or a bad pot .

I dont think it has to do with bumps. I want to say one time I was park, talking on the phone. It usually happens when I’m listening to the radio. I can;t remember if its happened with Bluetooth or only with FM. The last time it went out I tried switching inputs and nothing worked. Even the chime and the entertainment system voice (Fords version of Alexa or Siri) did not work. The unit still illuminates and acts as if everything is fine, but no soun d.

Probably internal with the head unit. Possibly fixable if you send it in to a repair tech, but unless you can replicate it on cue it may be hard to diagnose officially . If it happens a lot I might look for a replacement on ebay or something.
