“The information gathered thus far indicates that two groups of hurricane evacuees, one from Port Arthur and one from Beaumont, got into an argument and a large fight ensued,” Austin police said. “Individuals from both parties produced handguns. One person fired and struck a woman experiencing homelessness who happened to be nearby, but was not involved.”

Turns out stress is bad for everyone. Good thing we have level headed national leaders who can help guide us through these troubling times......

I’m reading a history of WWII right now. I am amazed by the extraordinary people who emerged to lead our military to victory, and a president who united a country divided between those who supported the war and those who didn’t. Where oh where are those people now?

Unpopular take : You, the p eople (as in “We, the People”) should not be allowed to produce guns. If you want to carry and shoot guns so badly, then enroll in the military.

I’m starting to think the United States has passed the point of no return.

You’re just reading the wrong history...America’s current leadership is more akin to 1930s Germany...just with more incompetence.

Hell, I’d be happy with a semi-rigorous testing and a license system.
We have that for cars, and they’re a far more necessary device with fatal potential .

Or maybe some sort of group where people join and learn techniques and rules and discipline of firearms . Some sort of militia, but more of a well regulated one.
![]() 08/27/2020 at 15:14 |

No we don’t have that for cars. I could go buy a car right now, with cash, and without any sort of background check or identification. The licensing and regulation only apply if you use it on public property.

My uncle (the cop in Houston) has stories about the weapons removed from refugees seeking shelter from Katrina. The police told the people before they got off the buses that they would be searched for weapons as the disembarked. Anyone caught with a weapon would go straight to jail. However, they were not paying attention to who was sitting in what seat, so they would not be prosecuting anyone for any weapons left behind on the bus. The Houston police confiscated thousands of weapons found on those buses.

That sounds exactly like the fucking police. Prey upon the scared and displaced. Threaten with incarceration those who have just barely escaped with their lives. Do not delude yourself into thinking this exercise was a good one. It was the exact opposite of that. Searching people leaving a bus? How about keep your fucking hands off me. Riding a bus to escape a storm isn’t a crime . I don’t like guns, but I fucking hate this shit that the fucking police pull much much more.
“We’re so glad you were saved when 3500 of your neigbors were killed by this massive storm. Now empty your pockets or you’re going to jail.” Fuck the police.

I started teaching online yesterday. I spent the day in a t-shirt, but I chanted to a nice polo for the lesson. My son’s teacher always teaches in a v-neck white t-shirt. I would never do that. I said to my wife that I guess I was just raised right. Which brings me to this. Where the hell were these people’s parents? How can a generation of people think this is okay? Then again, their parents probably don’t realize this isn’t okay either.

![]() 08/27/2020 at 15:44 |

Perhaps I didn’t give enough context. These were not people who caught a greyhound to escape the storm. These were people who didn’t leave before the storm, were rescued after the storm, and were moving into a shelter where weapons were not allowed. Keeping weapons out of the shelter was paramount to making the shelters a safe place to stay.

The cops in Louisiana took 13 shots to kill a guy the other day. Not sure how many of them actually hit. And they are trained in marksmanship. The average person can’t hit shit.
A few weeks ago, a protester was killed in downtown Austin. He walked up on an Uber driver while carrying an AK-47 he brought to the protest “for protection .” The Uber driver was an active duty US Army soldier and veteran of Afghanistan. He didn’t miss when he shot the guy with the AK.
Even with training, it can be hard to keep cool and sight your weapon accurately. Just watch this video of the cops getting into a shootout with the Kehoe brothers. All of them shooting and not hitting a thing. It’s hard to aim when you are ducking.

That is a good point, though it’s not exactly that different from a certain point of view.
If you own a car/gun and never use it, then it really isn’t a danger to anyone, so it shouldn’t be required to have any necessary paperwork other than ownership documents.
If you own a car/gun and only use it on private property for sport (tracks, private land, ranges, etc), then the danger to other people who are not in the immediate vicinity is practically non-existent, so in addition to ownership, the only worry would be that it isn’t being “used” on the way to or from the private property. That means, a trailer for the race car and possibly a lockable case for the rifle/pistol.
If you own a car/gun and plan to use/carry it in public, then the full license (and even insurance?) should be documented and carried as proof. After all, if either is used incorrectly, the danger to anyone nearby is very high.
As an aside, I have spent quite a bit of time around firearm enthusiasts and collectors, and have fired many types of guns. I can tell you, when it comes to gun safety, these guys can be the most serious people around. If I knew that everyone who owned a gun had the same level of training and understanding about the danger of guns, I wouldn’t be worried at all about some random gun owner.
I know the current auto license system isn’t fool proof in keeping only safe drivers on the road, but it does give some legal ability to restrict people who operate vehicles and public, and some legal punishments to those who don’t follow them.

The cops over here actually shoot to maim
And usually just once
Most people shot by cops here don’t die

It’s easier to hit center mass than it is to shoot in the leg. The problem here is that for many cops shooting is the first option rather than the last resort.

Only in America do two large groups of people who are EVACUATING to ESCAPE DEATH by devastating natural disaster then produce handguns and SHOOT at each other over a relatively minor
....(no offense intended Americans, but it seems like a problem I can’t imagine happening anywhere else with your gun laws
)
....
I mean...y
ou’re ESCAPING a DEADLY NATURAL PHENOMENON and then WILLINGLY SHOOT BACK AND FORTH AT OTHER PEOPLE OVER A PETTY ARGUMENT.....like.....you’re escaping death....and then cause more death while escaping death.....I......I can’t even....
![]() 08/27/2020 at 16:04 |

The additional context simply makes the police sound like a worse group of people than they already seemed to be.

![]() 08/27/2020 at 16:05 |

Most cops are not trained at all in marksmanship . They usually do one qualifier a year, and it is very easy. If you can’t site a weapon while under stress, then you’re training has failed, as the only time you’ll need to shoot someone is under stress.
The protestor shot in Austin was also a veteran, but I don’t know if he served overseas.
![]() 08/27/2020 at 16:06 |

Gotcha. I’d avoid a situation like that at all costs. Cops can’t even properly search people before jailing them, no way would I trust them in a situation like that.

yeah...tbh... your cops are nothing like our cops
when i was in oklahoma some asshat called the cops on me for smoking weed (i wasnt...but i smoke rollies...i guess i can see where they came from there...)
anyhoo...got told to assume the position and got patted down it was wierd
they also took my cigarette apart...wich wasnt a big deal back then...but nowadays...omg do you know how expensive that shit is?
anyhoo...literally none of that would have happened here (i mean...even aside from weed being legal here back then)
the cops here pretty much dont touch you unless they plan to cuff you

“experiencing homelessness”
Does that mean she has a really nice place to live, but occasionally sleeps in the streets to see what it feels like to be homeless?
Or is that the new soft term for “currently homeless” or “between apartments”?
![]() 08/27/2020 at 16:58 |

“People Experiencing Homelessness” has been a term for a bit, not just with this reporter. Whether or nor it is better, I don’t know.
![]() 08/27/2020 at 16:59 |

I’m sure it’s the soft term. This is Austin, after all. Lots of homeless camps under the overpasses. I’m a pretty soft-hearted liberal, but I wish there were someplace else they could go. It looks terrible, and they leave their trash everywhere. Can’t put them all in one place, though, because it moves them away from their panhandling spots.

Most states have concealed carry laws, with varying requirements as well. The only thing that’s really
different is insurance, which realistically, isn’t going to prevent anything. And in most states (hedging because I don’t know them all), to transport a firearm without a permit, it has to be in a locked or otherwise separate compartment from ammo, though the people following those rules typically aren’t the ones you have to worry about anyway.
![]() 08/27/2020 at 17:36 |

Americans shoot no better than bad guys in a movie. IIRC, some years ago the LAPD fired 103 bullets at a parked truck they thought contained a cop killer. Not only did the truck not contain said cop killer but only two bullets actually hit one of the occupants inside. How...how do you miss a hundred shots?
![]() 08/27/2020 at 18:00 |

Hand guns are horribly difficult to fire accurately . It takes years of training and practice to shoot accurately even at 60 feet, say 20 meters.

I’ve been wanting a .22 for pli nking but I already have a hunting rifle that is good to 300 yards so my home defense perimeter is pretty wide.

but what do i know
![]() 08/27/2020 at 18:19 |

I was shooting a 357 revolver and had to keep getting closer to the target and was still way off. Once I was about 20 feet away I started hitting things... Some hand guns are much more accurate but still, for me I like knowing where the bullet is going... Long guns are designed for accuracy and I like shooting targets and wild game at distance.

Reading all this stuff from Australia is so sad. Godspeed to all you folk. Generations of bad education, politics and stupidity have screwed up your country. Sucks because I really wanted to drive across USA one day, but not worth it now.
There are a few nut jobs down here too for sure, driven by racism. But it doesn’t usually escalate to this sort of madness.
I’ve operated on people with Nazi tattoos and they all shut up when their sick and a brown surgeon has to open them up. I've had a racist neighbour that would now my lawns and clean my roof because he realised I was a busy guy, but still spread all this hate online.
Beyond the point of repair I think.

I remember that many years ago some company was arranging “ experience homelessness” adventures for wealthy people. The pa rticipants were given “ hobo” outfits and they were stripped of any valuable things. Then the participant had to survive one night as a regular homeless person. They did this in some fairly safe city but I cannot remember the location at all. Likely not in the US. I think the profits were given to charity.
I’m pretty sure that this hasn’t been done in years . And definitely not the case in this situation.

I signed a petition to get conceal and carry permits i n my state, because I was in favor of the additional training. However, I’m a bit fuzzy on the training requirements and the proof of passing the training. M ostly, I understand it to be f ocused on identifying situations where pulling your weapon is allowed, protocol when talk ing with police, and can be completed in a day.
Im not sure that it provides the amount of safety training and firearm respect that I would prefer .
Considering that getting a driving permit at 16 here requires 50 logged hours of driving with a licensed driver, a written exam, a practical exam, and then 2 years with a provisional license that has a curfew... the conceal carry permit testing seems quite easy in comparison.
Following the letter of all the laws or not is not my biggest worry with a firearm owner . I’ m far more scared of people who treat guns as toys, or who fetishisize scenarios where they would need to kill someone. I’ve met both, and don’t stay friends with either very long.

The picture of him circulating in dress uniform shows him with an Afghanistan campaign ribbon but no CIB. So he has deployed but may not have actually seen anything, or the paperwork got lost/ taking a while. Either option is likely, honestly. Picture could be a few years ago at any rate. He’s got the 2nd Cav stetson and flag behind him but they are in Germany and he’s been promoted since then, apparently

That was my first thought and I looked at some but they seem really cheaply made and the stocks on the ones I looked at were very short so not comfortable at all for me to shoot. They said I should look at the stainless steel version for close to $400. I can get a nice bolt action in another brand for that.
