...that if you lived in Japan between 2007-12* , you could buy a Toyota Corolla hatch with a 3.5L V6 stuffed under the hood. Plus, a s if a 280hp Corolla wasn’t a world-class Q -car already , it didn’t even come with a loud body kit.
It had a truly excellent name too, even by JDM standards. Meet the Toyota Blade Master G:
*and therefore if you live in a JDM-friendly country like NZ, you can in theory get one now . Never seen one for sale, but I’ve never known they existed before e ither, and Toyota hatches aren’t something I habi tu ally cruise eBay for, so who knows.

“ Toyota Blade Master G ” sounds like the opening lyric to a bad rap. But that is a seriously kickin’ name.

Damn cool. Such a cool name. 280hp from factory in a Corolla is incredible. I’m in Aus but I’ve never seen one.
Some unique styling too. I’m not sure if it’s more attractive, but it’s factory and it’s cool :

For a market that invented simple Kei cars, and has stiff penalties for "too much power" in cars... damn te JDM home market got a lot of cool hardware.

You mean it didn’t make 276 hp? ;)
![]() 08/26/2020 at 20:22 |

It did. Japan uses DIN hp ratings (i.e. PS). It’s 276 in English/US money.

Damn, I wonder how much it actually made. Supposedly they gave that up in 2005, so maybe it really just happened to coincidentally be that much.

I’m just going to think of:

Why wait? If you move to Japan you can have one now

Good question. Being a 2005 launch, it was probably specified in 2004, before the gentlemen’s agreement fell over, so the 276hp spec won’t be a coincidence. However according to Wiki, the 2GR-FE engine made around 295-315hp in other applications , so the version in this certainly *could* be putting out much more than 276 in reality. Against that, 280's a lot in a relatively light FWD car given early-2000s suspension technology, so maybe they had it throttled back to something the car could handle.
Lotus get 430hp out of the same engine in the Evora though, so the tuning potential’s there. If wheelspin and torque steer are your thing :-)

Canadian is a much easier language to master.

I believe Lotus supercharged that engine to get those figures.

I didn’t say it was *cheap* tuni ng potential :-)

Fair.

That engine cover looks familiar. Is that a 2GR-FE?

Yup

I figured it looked familiar. It's the same as our 2008 Toyota Sienna.
