Rode hard and put away wet.

I believe this car would have the single row IMS, too.

2000-05 are the prime candidates for IMS failure. That being said, 150k is a lot to go without it failing, so that’s a good sign.

K nown issue with the 986 six speed trans, either won’t go in or pops out, especially when cold. Probably $3,5 00 for a new trans. Most people would wait until it needed a clutch and do trans/clutch/IMS. But your’re looking at $6000+ .

I have the 5-speed, but personally would not be able to live without 2nd gear. It’s the best one, and gets the most use.

Offer $3,000, drop in a 5-speed trans and a 3.6L engine (2003-2004 Boxsters have same ECU and easily accept 911 engines). You’d be at $20k+ but that would be a fun car.

Eh, if you want the project, go for it. The second gear thing is a known issue per the 986 forum.

At 147k miles, I wouldn’t be concerned about the IMS bearing failure. There’s a reported 8% failure rate (per the class action lawsuit) and a 90% survival rate at 90k miles.

Yup on both counts. The single row is the bad guy, but the fact that this car has a lot of miles is a positive in that regard.

That’s good from what I understand from an IMS standpoint. If the cars are driven hard the IMS has oil flung at it and gets lubricated. If you just waddle about and don’t drive hard, let the car sit, those seem to fail at a higher rate.

You could be into it with a new trans for probably less than 10K. Seems like an okay number.

I think these particular Boxsters are bottoming out. The supply is dwindling and is the cheapest way into a Porsche.

That’s my understanding too. But this car still looks pretty beat to me.

However, if you’re up for DIY repairs and maintenance this might be fun to hoon around a bit.

I like the Frankenstein aspect but eventually you have to sell it and it becomes “somebody’s project car” - which we all shit on in this forum. When you say 3,500 for the trans, is that new or rebuilt?

That was a guess on a rebuilt trans.

And yes, after dumping $25,000 into the 3.6 L Boxster build , you had better keep it. You aren’t getting your money back.

(then again, a 986 ‘ Boxster R’ might bring $40,000 on BaT)
