I am, once again, renting a cabin at Shakamak State Park, which is about an hour in any direction from any place you’ve ever heard of (unless you happen to be an off-roading enthusiast, in which case it’s possible you’ve heard of Redbird, a state-run park a half hour from here).

This isn’t my favorite part of the state: it’s too flat, despite being in southern Indiana, which is overall dramatically more hilly than the rest of this rather uninteresting state. I’m in coal country, so pretty much every photo here was taken where there used to be a coal mine.
Thankfully, I noticed the two ticks that tried to make my life miserable before they got settled in, but that made for a rather unhappy few minutes as I tried to ignore all the buzzing flies long enough to make sure I didn’t have any more hitchhikers. And no, no photos of the ticks, or unfortunately the large snake, but see the end for one rather intimidating critter.
Also, I’m sharing my screened-in porch/office with this rather large guest, who gets to stay rent-free by eating the really annoying bugs. The key is a couple of inches closer to the lens, so in effect the spider is nearly the same size as the key.
And this is not a small key.
I have to admit I didn’t enjoy sunrise quite as much as I should have, knowing she was just a couple of feet behind me.

Crawfish chimney! (Or crawdad, o r mudbug, or c rayfish... it all depends on where you’re from). We have a few of those in the ditch every year.

I’ve never seen a chimney where I live, but I did rescue a crayfish crossing the street one rainy night. Freaked my then-wife out; turns out she has a pretty severe phobia about creatures of that general aesthetic.

I know this type (orb weaver) and I know they’re harmless; I’d have to read up on yours before I was willing to get close. That’s pretty creepy.

I actually did get the vibe that it wasn’t the most dangerous but I wasn’t taking any chances. I’ve seen a few around, not that I’m really looking for spiders, but the sheer size of this one was crazy. That can stay on the other side of the fence.

my boss found crayfish in a school’s water recycling holding tank because the plumber ran the overflow line to the wetlands in a reverses slope.

We’re about 25 yards away from the local detention pond, but our swale/ditch stays fairly wet most of the time. I even had one chimney appear in our side yard during one particularly wet season.
