Frozen bacon cooks just fine in the oven.

Did you lay it out flat before freezing it?

My preference is just to fry it up in its own fat in a cast-iron skillet. Causes holiday tension when I’m at my parents as they prefer to microwave it until it is ruined, and then cook it more.

I have a cast iron griddle I take camping. I cook a lb of bacon the first morning, then I use the bacon grease the rest of the trip. The 12v fridge is great for storing it. Makes the best pancakes and eggs. I’m probably going to die young, might as well enjoy it!

Nah, I get thick cut bacon from a butcher shop that came in a bag. I took it out of the freezer for about 15 minutes and separated it, the last couple of pieces were resisting so I ran some warm water over them for a few seconds until they came apart.

G
ood lord what? They par cook the bacon in the microwave and then do what to it? The crimes against food that happen every day are stunning.
Frying is awesome, awesome and very messy with lots of grease spattering everywhere . I have had tension with my in-laws because I was frying meat too aggressively in their house years ago.
When you cook in the oven it still cooks in its own fat and you can cook much more at one time.

Who wants to clean that microwave?

My buddy, presumably before he started dieting, used to buy the big package of thick cut bacon from Sam’s. He cut the brick of bacon in half, then fried it in a cast iron skillet. But he never drained the fat. By the second batch, he was basically deep frying the bacon in bacon grease. My god, was that good.

I approve of this message.
Alternate tip: if you don’t want to use the oven, use a frying pan with a lid. It’ll thaw things out before they get too crispy, at which point individual slices can be separated
. Separate them, t
hen remove the lid and let it crisp up.

They wrap them in paper towels to make sure absolutely no moisture remains...

I feel like you must be one of those people that’s never had a good piece of crispy bacon. My wife had a sandwich from Jersey Mike’s the other day that had bacon on it that was completely inedible. M y wife took the bacon off her sandwich and I was incredulous as I scooped it up and put it in my mouth. Two chews later and I was running for the trash can.
I will never be able to figure out how they managed to turn bacon into flavorless, but somehow too salty, plastic.

No, I’ve had good bacon. Good bacon is still not good. I just don’t like the taste, the texture, or the smell.

Cooking bacon on the oven is the biggest cop out of all time. It’s an inferior way to cook bacon. Fry it in a pan. Only.
The secret is to not let anyone convince you otherwise.

I don’t think frying in its own fat results in any more or less fatty bacon. It does make the bacon cook much more evenly though. That’s a win. I dislike having the near raw bits on the same strip as the burned/no moisture left bits.

They should be rounded up by the cooking police and sentenced to clean and re- season cast iron pans. That ought to teach ‘em how to cook bacon.

They do love their cast-iron, they just prefer terrible bacon for some reason...

Compromise ? Plain bacon is best fried on a griddle or in a (cast iron) pan. Candied bacon should be made in the oven though.
Both are equally delicious.

It sounds like you have a case of dysbaconasia. Such a rare disease you won’t find it in most medical texts. I’m sorry you have to miss out on all the wonderful qualities of bacon.

I’ve never been taken to task for cooking bacon in the oven and I respect the commitment to frying. Still, I’m not sure the additional time, mess, and hassle are worth it.

Oven bacon is still the easiest way to make bacon, and honestly there’s no actual difference in taste if you don’t use a rack on top of the pan. Cleanup is a breeze, and crispness of the bacon is much easier to control.

Mmm bacon.
Going camping for the rest of the week. We take instant oatmeal for breakfasts, and a few slices of bacon wrapped in foil in our cooler for each morning to throw on the campstove.
Not the same as having a full breakfast with buttered toast, eggs, potatoes, etc... but the bacon goes a LONG way in starting the day off right.

That’s just incorrect. The additional time and effort is exactly what makes it better and worth it. Over here on the fun side of the Potomac, we know from good bacon.

True, but if it has a lid it’s probably toxic when heated. (I reheat bacon wrapped in a paper towel, but that takes 20 seconds).

I disagree. Cooking bacon on a rack or in a microwave is the worst way to cook bacon, both for different reasons . Cooking in an oven in a pan is the best way because it allows precise temperature control and the bacon comes out evenly cooked .
