I remember reading somewhere that they toned down the test blast from 100 mega tons because they weren't quite convinced they wouldn't have set the entire atmosphere on fire.

exactly correct, that is why it works so good - but you need the fear that you are not going to get away with the initial strike to prevent it. Very similar to Teddy R’s “speak softly but carry a big stick.” Align incentives to prevent global war even if all sides have enough horse power to blow the earth to bits.  Kinda stressful but works great.

The man who designed the bomb changed the tamper (the envelope that wraps the bomb and seeves to reflect neutrons) from uranium to lead, predicting correctly that it’d reduce the yield in half. This was unlike Castle Bravo, where they ended up overshooting their yield by 2.5 times because they didn’t account correctly for the effects of lithium in the device.

It is very much real, and ingeniously simple, of course, it didn’t actually become operational until about 20 years after Dr. Strangelove . Don’t know if it was possible with 1960s technology, probably was.
