I attacked the drivers side today after work.
As on the other side, all the rust was concentrated in the rear 1/3rd of the frame. Bunch of scraping and brushing, and I was done.
Next, I went for the diff. I don’t have a power washer, so I rinsed it, then scrubbed it with my drill attachment.
Pretty happy with the result. I did the crossmembers as well while I was under.
I decided to remove the rubber bed mat, and work on the rust there as well. Some poking and hammering proved to be deadly to the bed - screwdriver went right through.
For these, I’ll have to schedule a time with my friend who has a welder and metal chunks. Two holes are right next to the bolts that hold the bed, two are in random spots which should be easy to fix.
The rubber mat is thick enough for the dogs not to cut themselves, so we can keep going for our daily swimming adventures.
Always something with old trucks...

This really makes me appreciate my dad’s entirely rust free 300k mile 02 Tundra TRD. Never been undercoated or even given a good clean down there. Even a particularly rust prove area where it is inexplicably just primer after the paint fell off has no rust. There is a tiny but of surface rust in an unlikely place on the bumper where the primer fell off, but the thing is solid.
Good work by the way. I'm not here to float. Fantastic trucks, those Tundras.

Do you plan to apply POR-15 or the Rustoleum equivalent over the spots?

Man, that is like a unicorn in the 1st gen world. Thanks!

Spots in the bed? The ones that are too far gone (screwdriver through the bed), I’ll cut around and weld in new sheet metal.
If they aren’t too far gone, then I’ll scrape and brush and paint with the same stuff I used on the frame.

And it is also the best color, green, but doesn’t fall victim to fragile clear coat except on the bumper where 8t sticks out of the carport . Sadly the interior is that horrible pleather stuff but it is one of the nicest you’ll find anywhere.
I’d do a photo dump but I’m on my phone.
Most around here have clearcoat like my uncle’s truck. Only 220k miles or something like that. Pretty low for a V8 Tu
ndra but it has never spent a day indoors. Also entirely rust free. Georgia is a good place for rust prone vehicles.

My clear coat is perfect everywhere except on the top of the bed sides. 20 years parked outside in Colorado sun. Interior is also spotless and it’s fabric - well, other than one spot where my dad spilled some bleach on the carpeting.
That is a good looking truck! Very clean.

The Georgia sun has baked the clearcoat almost to the point of complete failure on the roof even while sitting under a cover most of the time. The hood has a few failing spots now but they aren’t obvious yet. The bumper needs to be repainted because the clearcoat is getting a little bad there . It’s still miles better than most 2000s Toyotas though. I think the green paint in particular had clearcoat issues.
The interior is very durable everywhere but the fake leather. The cloth interior holds up much better and is arguably more comfortable to sit in, but I don’t like the bleh gray color it comes in.

Ha! My interior is a blah pale blue with a weird blueish dash. My color is Platinum Metallic - way rarer than the Tunder Gray Metallic that was so popular.

That was the real light gray color right? I’m having trouble picturing the bluish dash. Got a picture?
My dad's truck has the beige interior.

That looks like basically the same bleh gray I was thinking of. Maybe it does have a slight blue tinge to it. That cloth sure looks a lot better than nearly 20 year old fake leather.
But. . .
Wait, why are you crediting your images in comments? I’ve never had to do it.

I didn’t know you didn’t have to in comments. That will save time.

Oh yes, it saves tons of time.
