yep..that was a little unexpected
got to chatting with his dad...eventually turned to talking about work...turns out he powdercoats the custom orders for my little company... small world
anyhoo mentioned i started out as a panelbeater and never really expected to end up building coffee machines
turns out he runs a car body shop....certainly explains all the cars that keep turning up
anyhoo..apparently the jobmarket for panelbeaters has shifted again from not enough work for panelbeaters to nobody willing to take up the trade nowadays..
but he basically offered me a trial at least if i get bored of coffee machines (or the company goes tits up)
anyhoo..i think i should look into taking a refresher course just in case lol

Nice. It's great how sometimes the world turns and the sun smiles down and offers you new options.

I haven’t had my coffee yet so all I gather here is “custom-ordered coffee machine
s” and wonder what kind of person orders customized coffee machines.

If you have to wonder then you are not the target market...

Everyone makes fun of me for saying “coffee machines” instead of coffeemakers. Even as a native English speaker, the word always comes out as “coffee machines” and sounds better.
Now if you’ll excuse me, my dishwasher is acting up. She got a bad night of sleep and is feeling a little sick today.

Panel beater sounds dirty but isn’t, well not the fun kind of dirty anyway.

it is pretty satisfying tho :p

Might be worth doing some contract work for him on the side, just to get your foot in the door, and to figure out if you like the work & environment.

might be....tbh...im pretty sure i still got prep down at least...probably pretty rusty for the rest...it has been like 15 years...lol

Check if his shop is air conditioned. Wouldn’t want you to faint again from the heat ;)
I don’t know how the pay stacks up but if you are looking for a change I would look into it.

im not exactly looking for a change...but i am also not exactly optimistic about my current job surviving the rona...and it really would be good to be back in automotive
i havent asked about pay but tbh it would probably be better than what i get now anyway..im not making a lot here (but the work is fun)

Cars aren’t going anywhere. Car accidents and the money to fix accident damage aren’t in abundance right now, but the degree of skill required to do that work means the pay is going to be better than work that requires less skill. I really don’t know anything more than that, but changing jobs is a complicated business. Benefits, salary, commute, mental and physical drain comparatively, there’s a lot that only you can weigh accurately. Not to mention job security and how contented you are at a current job. I don’t know, but I’d recommend considering it.

i am considering it....jobsecurity is pretty iffy all across the board at the moment courtesy of rona...buut for the moment i do have a lifers contract wich is a nice thing to have and doesnt come around that often...only goes so far if the company goes under tho lol
commute wouldnt change much...staying in the same city at least
the work would be a little more physical than what i have now (just by virtue of cars being a little big bigger and heavier than coffee machines) but tbh...it wouldnt be a huge change
i do love cars more than coffee machines tho

Yes, from what I can see you’d be trading the benefits of a larger company you’ve been with a while for a potentially more rewarding but perhaps more volatile industry.
I didn’t know you had that much job protection within the company though. That sounds pretty good though. What would happen if they wanted to outsource the production to a country with cheaper labor?
I saw another Oppo suggest doing some contract work for them to test the waters and get a feel for the industry again. That seems like the best idea I’ve seen so far.

eh...if they outsourced to a cheaper country odds are we’d all get bought out (tho i guess they could be complete dicks about it and say we can keep our jobs but have to move with the company) but tbh its a small company and handmade in the netherlands fetches a premium price over handmade in belarus for instance
in any event i suspect ill be seeing the guy around quite a bit as they are renovating the whole house before the son moves in
so we’ll see where this goes

Yes, don’t rush into anything. Take it easy and scope it out. Just seems like a potential good opportunity.
Handmade coffeemakers from the Netherlands. . . wait. . . who buys specialty handmade coffemakers?

I love those kinds of conversations.

large companys apparently
also...a surprising amount (or maybe not surprising) go to saudi arabia and the emirates

Huh.
![]() 08/20/2020 at 12:07 |

tbh...im surprised we sell any at all.... here ive taken the liberty of putting one together with all the options (most of wich you actually need)
and thats not even a top of the range model.....lol
![]() 08/20/2020 at 12:28 |

Umm, that’s a lot for a coffee maker that should be functionally nearly the same as an el cheapo one. All those “options” are things that are necessary for it to function! What happens if you don’t spec a “water bottle for water pump ?” Do you have to just pour directly into the pickup feed? I am imagining a very expensive coffee maker with no water pump, water bottle, or “head detection” (cup sensor?).
![]() 08/20/2020 at 12:35 |

I was about to be shocked at the price
. It’s a commercial vending type machine.
![]() 08/20/2020 at 12:55 |

i think they call them options coz you could source them from somewhere else...not coz you dont need them...lol
![]() 08/20/2020 at 12:57 |

that one is yup...even for a commercial machine it aint cheap tho
