It’s the “have a great day” that’s such a nice touch.

I like how they repeated the phone number IN AN EMAIL.

Congratulations! You made the scammers’ list!
https://www.federalreserveconsumerhelp.gov/consumeralerts/yellen-scam-emails-more
Fraudsters are using letters, emails and/or telephone calls, or videos on social media to harm consumers. Some of the communications allege to be from actual employees of the Federal Reserve, including, in some cases, Chair Janet Yellen. In an effort to convince consumers that the communications are authentic, they may include links to the Board of Governors website , other credible sources, or display caller ID from Federal Reserve offices. The communications may be threatening or they may request that personal information or money be provided. In addition, videos have been posted on social media alleging to show consumers how to use the Federal Reserve System routing number to pay personal debts. Consumers should protect themselves from criminal activity by never responding to such communications in whatever format they are introduced. The Federal Reserve System does not provide services or grants to individuals or hold accounts of individuals. Visit our “How do I…get a loan, deposit account or grant from the Federal Reserve Bank” in the Find an Answer area for more information about spotting frauds or scams. For more information related to social media videos related to using the Federal Reserve’s routing number to pay debts or for other purposes, click here .”

My favourite thing to do when scammers call is to respond in French. I’ve gotten some great responses back.
My other thing is telling them who I am and what I do for a living. They usually hang up immediately.

The sad thing is people fall for this kind of stuff. I mean, you can barely see that text through the giant wall of red flags it’s throwing up.
I just recently got a mortgage and that means there’s a new lien which is public record. It’s open season on my mailbox and phone right now, it’s just incredible. At least the postal service is making a bit of money off the scammers.

Was it originally an email, or was it Google Voice voicemail message to email conversion?

I assume this is a voicemail transcription or something.

Aah good point! I've never used speech to text so it never occurred to me...

It’s actually a transcription of a voicemail.

I don’t even have a phone attached to that line; it was a landline decades ago, I moved it to Vonage, and eventually stopped hooking up a phone, so now it’s strictly voicemail -> email transcription.

I hate to profile, but non-native English structures are usually a red flag. Even people who are ESL can read a native script, and this isn’t one.

Some years back I got a phone message from “ Officer John Marshall of the Crime Investigation Department of IRS.” It was sounded serious , but when he ended the call with “And ma y God save you,” I knew I had to call them right away.

Wow. I really need to add “And may God save you” to the signature line of my personal emails.
He definitely sounded like a “John Marshall”.

I’m getting a lot of these transcribed in via an old Google Voice number. Some of the messages are in German, with an Austrian accent, which is weird.

The company I work for does translations so we’re in the unique position of being able to easily tell a bad translation and not able to dismiss it because it might be a genuine client. It really gets difficult when the potential client is from an African country. You don’t want to insult them, but you don’t want to waste time on a scammer either. The sc ammers will always eventually give themselves away, it’s just a matter of how much time you dedicate to it.

Ask if he has a cousin that can help me with an extended warranty for my 1948 Hudson. The last guy I spoke to hung up after I told them what car I wanted covered.

I sometimes get phone calls supposedly from “Fido’s Mandarin division” (Fido being my mobile phone provider). The rest of the message is in Mandarin, and have no idea what they are saying.

I hate these people so much, especially because they pray on the elderly. Almost had my grandpa emptying the bank account because my “dad was in jail and needed to be bailed out.”
I’ve explained to him many times even if I was in jail or in trouble, I am not going to him for money. He is at the bottom of the list and I’ll just sit in jail instead. Hopefully this was the final wake up call to him, but these people never rest. They can go to hell.
