Looks like Oz is getting the Thar ...

According to CarAdvice it’s due in the first half of 2021. Soft top, hard top, removable doors (of questionable legal status), manual gearbox (or auto if you swing that way, petrol or diesel engine (2.0 litre petrol and 2.2 litre diesel,   both around 320 torques), rear diff lock... Mahindra price tag (perhaps AU$25,000 -30 ,000.... so about half the cost of an Oz spec Wrangler).

If I was in the market for new Wrangler, and you told me there was something broadly equivalent for half the price, I know I'd at least cross shop it.

I like cheap things! Does Mahindra sell anything else on the Oz market already?

If people realize it exists, it’ll sell well.

Hey, good morning. You and I were corresponding the other morning and then the guy who started the thread moved it and I couldn’t follow up. I don’t blame anybody in another nation for feeling sick of the US. I was not offended at all. I hope there are no hard feelings left floating. I think any nation has the potential of annoying another, even among close allies. But our current president is such an imbecile , and I do not understand how people can still support him.

Cheers!

So a pleasant (convertible) half city and half bush vehicle the average city dwelling Aussie might own without too many image issues?

They do quite well in some regional markets ( where the local dealer has their shit together) with the Genio and Pik-Up utilities. There’s also a couple of SUVs but they are rarer.

Fair to say they are a niche player...few of their offerings are sufficiently refined or overpowered enough for the look at me suburban market.

Broadly, in this instance, is perhaps being generous. The Thar is quite a bit smaller and much less dynamically sophisticated (!) whilst also being comparatively underpowered in the weight versus watts department. However, if you didn’t cross shop this against a Jimny and a used JK Wrangler ... you’d be nuts.

Only has to do as well as the Jimny...or the Pik-Up. Neither of which sell more than a few hundred a year...

Yeah, but 50% off is a pretty huge savings. Is it 50% the car? Or is it 75% of a Wrangler for 50% of the money? Its a compact, 2-door, open 4x4 with rugged, off-road capabilities, that’s probably close enough for a lot of shoppers. Its probably pretty close to what a Wrangler was in the ‘90s, and people used those Jeeps for all the same things they use 2020 models for.

Absolutely true...but most shoppers (in my experience) are idiots who will happily pony up the extra monthly payment just to get heated seats,  Apple/Android functionality and a Jeep badge.

If you are right handed (like most people) then RHD is the most appropriate driving  side... isn't that obvious?

Yeah, but 50% is 50%. That’s almost the price gap between an entry level 4-cylinder Camaro and a C8 Corvette, I doubt a Chevy dealer would be able to swing somebody from a $25,000 Camaro into a $58,000 Corvette by talking monthly payments. Someone in that price range either can’t afford a car twice as expensive, or has already made up their mind that they just don’t want to spend that much, regardless of whether they can technically afford it.

If you’re talking a difference of few thousand Australian D ollarydoos, different story. Shell out a few grand more to get a bigger, better, more capable vehicle, that’s a choice that lots of people would make. But doubling the price is a much more significant leap - that’s exactly the same as  going from a Mitsubishi Mirage to a Dodge Challenger.

Again, truth...but if you are the sort of Australian punter that both wants and can afford a new JL Wrangler 2 door then (I suspect) that you will look quickly down your nose at the plucky Thar whilst thinking if it’s that cheap then it must be crap. Very typical Aussie, sadly.

So I’m thinking the Thar is more for the younger set who could never afford a new Wrangler or think a Jimny is too small and not a convertible...or for nutjobs like me who think it could make for a hilarious rural runabout (because if it turns up...I will be checking it out)

No, you need your right hand for rowing the gears.

You all must have a heck of a time reaching across to select the gears. Dislocated shoulders and worse.

Having driven both LHD and RHD cars in various countries...I can assure you that the gearstick falls to the side appropriate hand in every occasion in a properly designed motor vehicle. And the transition is not that hard...though emergency situations can be challenging!!

I have many times wondered about how I might do if I were ever given the opportunity to drive in R HD roads. People have told me that for them, the harder part was first gear is away from the left knee when RHD. When I was stationed in Germany, there were Brits who’d driven their cars from England and were RHD on LHD roads. Those guys were interesting because everything they owned and drove was (naturally) better made and ran better than the American-made counterparts. A Vauxhall, for instance, ran much better than the identical Chevrolet Citation.

Every car I’ve ever owned seems to have had a slightly different transmission pattern up until this last set (which is admittedly the best part of 20 years old). Presumably because makers used to make their own transmissions whereas now they are merely variations on a small range of stock designs from a specialist transmission manufacturer.

The thought just occurred to me that in 30 years of driving...I don’t think I’ve ever driven an American made car. British, Italian, French, German, Swedish, Polish , Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Australian...yes. But not, to my memory, American. There you go...
