I have a clear memory of the only time I ever did something that was sufficiently and deliberately stupid that risked any serious injury. I was a pretty risk-averse kid and didn’t much hang out with kids my age who were likely to egg me into something like that.

Here’s my story of extraordinary stupidity. I was probably about 16 or 17, and I was hanging out at a friend’s house. He was talking to his girlfriend on the phone, and I was bored. So I took out his spring action BB gun (M1 carbine replica) and looked for something to shoot at. I found a .22 long round , set it up on a cardboard box, and took aim. I kept missing, so I walked up on it and shot it at point blank range. The BB hit the cap, and the bullet fired. Fortunately, much of the energy was expended by the casing going down through the box, because the slug ended up lodged in my right nostril. I felt a burning and swatted at my nose, and the slug fell out. I put the gun down and left, shaking like a leaf.
