Meme  Guns are great. I want a version of this with a barrel so long that a ny velocity gained by the long bar rel is also lost due to the added friction.

better to have and not need, than to need and not have! Does that work for your justification?

I mean, technically, it can be said just about anything... pet rock, SpaceX rocket or official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle , with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time

It’s so that you can put a shoulder stock on it. So for hunting purposes it’s still eligible for pistol season, yet you can get much more accuracy by having the shoulder stock.

I knew 16” was the minimum rifle barrel length, and would love to see one offered as an accessory item. I’m sure the company won’t do it for fear that someone would add it to the shorter barrel option.

I wonder if you could run afoul of the ATF if you had a stock for this and also had one with a six inch barrel since it would fit that as well.

I actually used to have a Crossman pellet pistol where you could add a stock to it.

SBR rules mean that even if a 16" barrel is okay to be a “rifle” after you put a stock on, it needs to exceed a certain overall length with the stock taken back off to not instantly become illegal. Or at least, that’s how I read it . If memory serves, based on measurement of my Uberti, it would need something like 4 " more vs. 16" to stay “rifle safe” with the stock off. Derp.

A big part is probably that it would be a replica of the “Buntline Special” Colt revolver which was carried by Wyatt Earp and “Bat” Masterson.

Also, as someone else mentioned with a 16” barrel you can legally add a shoulder stock. In my state there are certain hunting seasons where you can use a rim fire pistol and some that require the use of a rifle. With this and a shoulder stock you could use one gun for both.

I’m sure the first will be the main reason for sales simply because I can’t see someone buying this as their first/only rim fire.

Unfortunately it falls into one of those areas where my legalese isn’t good enough for a definitive answer. There was a change in the wording of the NFA rules due to Thompson Center selling the contender in kits that could be assembled as either a rifle or a pistol.

They added a distinction that reads as “assembled from a rifle” being one of the defining characteristics. It also included another criteria where the shape of the grip needed to be considered.

This is actually something I’ve been desperate to know. Thanks. In other words, there is an official special pleading in place that as long as the device was originally constructed as a pistol, as long as rifle parts convert it to a legal rifle and it was a legal pistol to start with, it can go back; what the NFA otherwise implies notwithstanding. It is only illegal if there is also a barrel present that would permit for construction of an SBR.

Up until now I’d had to be working off the wording of the original NFA, which is... dumb wording.

In other words - per clarification, putting a rifle grip on a 12" buntline is not allowed, but putting it on a 18" target buntline and taking it back off at will *is*.

This means I can buy the Uberti 18" barrel and make a Colonel Mortimer stock for it, which is something I’ve been wanting to do, without worrying about making the barrel 20" with a permanent flash hider or w/e because it doesn’t have to “stay a legal rifle after I make it a legal rifle”. Heh.

I’ve fired a .44 with a 9” barrel and thought that was comically sized. This would be ludicrous the first time.

I’m curious if anyone even makes a case to transport it, or if you’d just have to use one of the cases designed for a youth sized rifle.

Don't feel bad. I grew up assuming Robert E. Lee's battle flag (you know, THAT flag) was the Stars & Bars. It wasn't until I got into Civil War history that I realized the Confederates had more than one flag. Sooo many Southern state flags make a lot more sense now.

Kinja'd!!!0

No you can’t* .

* Adding a front grip makes it an AOW according to the National Firearms Act.  You can do it, but you’d have to apply for a $5 AOW Tax Stamp first, and wait a year for the painfully slow NFA approval process.  Once approved, then you can add the grip. Then you need to get it NFA engraved and are subject to all the NFA regulations (restrictions on inter-state transport, etc.)

Kinja'd!!! Snuze: Needs another Swede > Kiltedpadre
08/13/2020 at 11:01

Kinja'd!!!0

Be careful with this. As far as I understand it, the ATF’s official position is that if you add a stock and turn it into a rifle you can “ never” turn it back into a pistol . Unless it’s a Thompson Center Contender/Encore, because they won a legal case saying it’s okay as long as in the con version process you never put it into an SBR configuration. But apparently the ATF continues to issue opinion letters counter to the results of said case.

Also, someone above mentioned adding a front grip and scope, but a front grip makes it an AOW (Any Other Weapon) and requires an NFA $5 Tax Stamp before you construct it.

Interesting. I’ve always understood it as “You can convert a pistol into a rifle but once in that configuration it can *never* be turned back into a pistol”. I’ve always wondered how guns like the TC Contender got around that. Your explanation makes a lot more sense.

At this point it will be nothing but a thought experiment because it sold out before I even got home from work.

I doubt it will come back; at least at that price either. If they were to do it where you got both a .22lr and .22wmr cylinder for $210 or less I’d jump on it though. In .22wmr it’d  make a fun way to take care of some groundhogs.

That’s the way the original NFA reads, which is a giant pile of stupid, but the ATF memo that Kilt edPadre linked appears to be a formal statement otherwise that “no, we admit that read is the natural one , but that’s just loony - just don’t make the “rifle” step as SBRs mkay”.

I could see the long barrel version for someone that wants to moose or elk hunt with a revolver. The short barrel 45-70 I guess is to compete with the Alaskan without the versatility of accepting a smaller less expensive cartridge.
