Happy Hump Day, Oppo.
Here’s an airplane that is familiar to most Opponauts, the Aviation Traders Carvair. The Carvair was developed by Freddie Laker from surplus Douglas DC-4s and military C-54s . The signature hump at the front housed the cockpit, which was raised up to allow the whole fuselage to be used to carry five cars in the front and up to 22 passengers in the back. The original idea was that people might like to go on holiday and take their own car with them, but the aircraft could also be converted to carry all passengers, or all cargo, or a flexible combination of both . The Carvair first flew on June 21, 1961, and a total of 21 were built. T hree were lost in crashes.

That is one of those endearingly ugly designs. It’ s almost like it belongs in a kid’s cartoon.

This is the plane that has been flying around western Montana all summer. It’s military, has 4 engines and a bubble over the cockpit. Plus a well defined thingy hanging off the tail. I thought it was a 707 aerial refuel jet.

That looks an awful lot like a P-3 Orion . Jets or turboprops?

Obviously they’ve heard about the Russian submariners who would like to see Montana.

With straight wings like that, it’s definitely not a KC-135 (707ish tanker). Like ttyymmnn says, it looks a bit like a P-3, though I don’t think there’s much call for sub-hunters in Montana. There have been models converted to firefighting duties, but in all the pictures I can find they are marked more or less like this (and have lost their MAD boom):

This one looked like it had turbo props, there was a different plane up here a month ago that was a spitting image of a 707 so i assumed it was the same plane. But I can’t see why there would be a P3 in Montana.

This article states that P-3 are starting to enter the firefighting business. That might make sense in MT.

The one I saw last night was definitely an orion P-3. Why it’s in Kalispell I have no idea.

No this one was all grey and I could see the navy aviation star on the rear part of the fuselage .

That looks like a DC-7 with an overpressurization issue, like the cabin outflow valve got stuck.

When I was playing in the Abilene Philharmonic, I used to hang out at Dyess AFB and watch the planes come and go. One day, I spotted this factory-fresh P-8 Poseidon. The aircraft was based in Florida, and it came through Abilene, did a couple of touch and gos, and then headed off into the sunset. Maybe those P-3s are using the Kalispel runway for practice? I see the same thing here in Austin, with USAF and Navy trainers coming though just to land and then take off again. I photographed both F/A-18 and T-38 at AUS, and see plenty of T-6 Texan IIs.

That is the only thing I can think of. Glacier Park International airport has a legit runway and not that much air traffic compared to other airports in the area like Missoula or Bozem an.

Keep an eye on this website . If you are in a position to check when you see one, fire it up and see what the a/c is and its flight path. If you click the U in the top of the map, it only shows military aircraft, or at least those military aircraft that want to announce their presence. A list on the right side IDs all a/c in the frame, and clicking an individual blip will give you more information about that plane.
