I am trying to buy this large, expensive, out of production Lego set for my son’s 18th birthday. I’ve been legit outbid twice, and I have tried twice using the “Buy Now” and each time the seller has canceled my order. The second time, just today, the seller sent me an email and said this:
Hello, sorry I am unable to complete this transaction currently because I am away from home. If you are still interested just let me know if you would like me to contact you regarding this item in a couple weeks when I am home. I apologize for the inconvenience.
He did refund the money right before sending this message . I have very little eBay experience, and this just seems fishy to me somehow . This is the seller:

What say you, Oppo?

I think you'll get a lot of replies on this, and some of them might actually be helpful... But from what you've said, and looking at that item, it might be time to find a different item to bid on. Personally, I like to snipe things. I decide how high I'm willing to pay and if it hasn't gone higher than that, I place that bid when there's literally five or 10 seconds left until the auction closes. That's the only way I ever bid on anything.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 23:05 |

But is it worth emailing him and telling him that I’m still interested? The price, though high, is about right for this item.

As long as you buy it properly though ebay you’ll have a recourse to get your money back. If the product dosent arrive, seller is unresponsive, and no refund, You can open a case with eBay and get your money back. It could take over a month but its not lost in the ether.

Do you get the sense that the guy is legit in his offer? What are the chances he is just going to sell it out from under me for a higher bid? I suppose that’s always a chance.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 23:08 |

Oh fuck, it is. Damn good chance that’s a scammer.
![]() 08/10/2020 at 23:09 |

Sure. But first check how many deals he has and his feedback score.

Hmmm. Well, he did give me my money back. And he didn’t drink the Kool Aid.

I don’t think there would be any harm. Just make sure that if you buy it, you are buying through ebay, rather just sending money to seller directly. There is of course the risk that they turn around and cancel it, but at least then you aren’t out the money. What you really want to avoid is sending money and getting nothing.
I do think it’s a bit weird that they are listing items they can’t sell, though maybe if the auction was supposed to end in the future it might make some sense.

The seller does not have any items for sale, so it may be true that he is out of town. You should contact him and ask that he offer the item to you before listing it again. Also, seller has 47 positive reviews since December, zero negative.

So that means buying it through the ebay website, rather than just sending money directly to him. I would not do that, but thanks for the tip.

Yeah, trying to do things out of band might be an attempt to cheat ebay, but it could also be an attempt to cheat you. Though the fact that he’s saying “ talk in a few weeks” instead of “send me money now” makes him sound more like a flake than a scammer.

I think this is highly suspect; are you sure it’s real Lego he’s selling?
I did an image search on AliExpress using your topshot and it brought up this and about a dozen similar listings.

They have the identical photo on their listing for this knock-off set. Now that could be because they just used the original Lego images for their
ad but I’m dubious due to lack of logos.
He may be cancelling on you because Chinese drop shipping is screwed up right now (no planes = no air freight) and he can’t get product. For context m y orders from April just arrived last week.
I’ve been considering buying one of these big copycat
sets to try
just
due to their low
price and if the original is
out of production
you’re not even
depriving anyone legitimate
of revenue
.

Considering its the only item they have for sale I' d expect its a true story rather then any scheme. You could agree on a price and ask them to list it at a fixed price with no auction.

That wasn’t his photo. I just searched that for my post. This is the photo that came with his post:

Sealed box is usually $900-$1100. That’s too rich for my blood.

There are several used too:

I’ve been keeping my eye on those. This particular one that I bought (or tired to) was the best looking one of the used sets.

Have you seen the Chinese knockoff of this set?
![]() 08/10/2020 at 23:49 |

I have not. I’m not sure my son would be happy with it, knowing it’s a knockoff. He’s pretty hard core Lego.

I had done a bing image search to figure out what Lego set this was, this was first result:

Nah it’s an album cover from a rapper called “Lil-uzi” that riffs on the logo. It was released March of this year so more likely he’s a yoof than a scammer.

I sell some stuff on eBay occasionally .
Honestly, it is summer. Even with COVID people take vacations. The person might not be home for 1-2 weeks and doesn’t want to hold your money hostage.

I wouldn’t worry about it. You can tell him you have to keep shopping because it’s for a time-sensitive birthday gift, but you’d love it if he reached out before he re-listed it and if you still need it you’d be happy to buy.
Sellers can do private ebay listings where you need a link (doesn’t show up in search) and a lot of times if you’re willing to stick around they’ll cut you a break when they’re back just to keep a sale and get some good feedback.
Some times people are just “out” and forget to take their listings down. If they don’t ship promptly it’s an automatic negative feedback. This sounds like responsible selling and not a scam. I’ve been on both the buy and sell side of expensive collectibles and it seems above board to me.

Holy. C rap.
I kno w Lego sets have never been an inexpensive toy/hobby/whatever the classification is, but I’m stunned that even desirable, out of production sets go for that kind of scratch.
But then again, I’m a filthy casual who dumped all of his Lego bricks, sets or not, into a big cardboard box as a kid, just to revel in the sheer quantity possibilities . (And I’m 50 old enough that cardboard boxes were the generic go-to storage medium for most things that milk crates didn’t serve. Plastic totes weren’t really a thing in the 70s, at least not that I remember.)

I can’t give you any advice on the ebay seller, but BrickLink is the place to guarantee an authentic set.
