So I’ve been haggling with a dealer the last few days on a Mustang GT I wanted to order. I like the crazy Grabber Lime and it’s only available for 2020.

They basically offered: “here’s an X Plan price take or leave it.” I left it.

Not being an amazing negotiator, what have I missed? There’s the X plan price and then the price I wanted for my budget. I was trying negotiate something in the middle.

Does X Plan = No Negotiation? Do dealers not haggle anymore? Was trying to haggle a MSRP of $46,270 down to something in the middle of $43k too presumptuous of me?

Can you even get a deal on a car anymore? Is it cuz this is a sport car and not some crossover?

Maybe they won't budge because you're trying to custom order? Incentives and special pricing usually only apply to vehicles on the lot right? I don't buy new cars so I could be wrong.

If you get something that is in really limited supply, they can pretty much dictate how they want you to buy it, because if you don’t buy it someone else will, in almost all circumstances except egregious markups. MSRP will be snapped up like that, they just have to play the waiting game.

Haggling is always a decent move as long as you’re not in one of those “no haggle” dealerships as they will just look at you funny while you waste your time.

But I tend to buy cars that have little give due to the fact that they are rare, expensive, in high demand, or all three, and you have to basically weigh how much you want to sit negotiating things (it can take all day if you don’t walk away) vs how much you actually want it.

If you want it, they can tell you want it and they know they don’t have to sell you a damn thing, even with this pandemic going on.

Source: have probably bought and traded in way too many cars at the dealers, all for unique or interesting things that don’t have many peers

Can’t haggle X-Plan. Think of it as supplier or employee pricing.

You might have more success trying another dealer and not mentioning X-plan however ball is often more in their court when special ordering.

Incentives apply to all cars whether ordered or on the lot. It’s the additional dealer discount that you’ll likely receive more of with an in stock unit.

S550 Mustang GTs are hot cars right now. Used, low-mileage 2018 and 2019 models are selling for nearly what they sold for new one or two years ago.

The dealer probably isn’t going to make enough profit to make ordering from the factory worth it at your offer.

I got a couple of Ford incentives and haggled with the dealer down some more when I custom ordered my Ford Transit a few years back. But n othing too special about a white cargo van.

20 years ago when I custom ordered my Audi S4, the dealer wouldn’t budge from MSRP. Probably because it was the first year of the S4 after the UrS4 was discontinued in the 90's and there was some kind of demand.

So this is probably the situation @idiot is in with the Mustang. There actually is or the dealer presumes there is some kind of demand. @idiot should shop around dealers.

Yeah, you might be expecting too much. As diplodicus said, the real deals to be had are on cars that are on the lot, especially those that have been there for some time.

I ordered my ~ $30k WRX and got less than a grand off. They then put my name on a car that was on its way over from Japan but not allocated yet. I got it a bit later over a month after ordering it.

FWIW, if you can afford it, get what you want. Don’t compromise to save a couple of grand because then one day  you’ll see a grabber lime car and think ‘fuck, I should’ve gotten that’. If you buy it and see another you’ll think ‘fuck yeah, great taste’. You won’t regret it.

Its practically impossible to haggle on a special order. As far as I know, dealers don't make much money on them anyway.

You’re lucky to find a dealer who will order something for you. Most places around me straight up refuse to do special orders. They might look around for a dealer trader in the area if things are slow. Maybe.

Conversely, there’s nothing stopping you from taking that same factory order to any other dealership.

Were it me, I’d call up another dealership and say if they can get me a fantastic price on my factory order right now , I’ll take it today (and actually deliver on that if they do). Leave the quote from this first dealer in your pocket - only take it out if you can’t get any other dealer to beat that  price.

Interesting - maybe because of the color? I’ve ordered our last tw o vehicles, the first ended up being basically full MSRP (though a good deal on some options) because the vehicle was super popular and they couldn’t keep them on the lot anyways , the other I got what I thought was a great deal, significantly under MSRP on both the car and options.

Do understand that the dealer does not know what factory programs will be after the car is built. The best deal is always the one you can touch today. Either you are willing to pay for exactly what you want, or you take whats out there. With covid and plant/part shutdowns or issues this is not a time to expect miracles
