Change your cabin air filters! I feel like I take reasonable care of my cars, and knew this needed to be done regularly, but just wasn’t getting around to it. Had the week off with no big plans, so did a lot of little stuff.

Let me assure you they looked much worse up close. Both cars cool appreciably better. Both were out and in in less than 5 minutes. Flex the sides of the glove box in so it can open wide for access to the filter. Old one out, new one in. Pushed sides of glove box in so it can get past the stop.

Breathe easier.

Had a rash of these after some wildfires nearby that caked up bad. One was blackened with soot from the fires and could barely pull air through it.

Also, getting to one of these filters in a VW ‘New Beetle’ (model name from 1998-2010) suuuucks.

Both of those look fine!

Meanwhile, I’ll pull out the photo I always share when the topic of cabin air filters is brought up.

Kinja'd!!!

This was removed in 2017 from a friend’s ‘03 WRX which he bought used in 2016.  The cabin air filter in those years was optional, and much more difficult to replace than in newer cars (required the removal of about half-a-dozen screws).  I doubt it was ever changed.

I do my  cabin and engine air filters every year on mine.

I should do mine I guess. The filter housing cover is held on by four screws and two are a real pain to get to. The cover on my S40 was toolless, and much nice in that regard. At least the engine air filter is super easy.

Whats the service interval on your engine air filter? Mine is three years/37,500 miles, so every year seems like a bit over overkill, unless I were driving way more than I am, or in harsh conditions. Granted the filter is pretty cheap, and very easy (on my car at least), so maybe a bit of preventative maintenance makes sense.

I’m ahead of the game: Jeep TJs don’t have one.

I don’t know what it is, I just do it preventatively. I used to drive around 15,000 miles a year before COVID.

Here’s the one for my SAAB when I first got it. You have to take the wipers off and remove two layers of cowling to get to it.

1998 and likely original.

My Viggen was 3 years old when I purchased it. I did a complete fluids and filters service as well as plugs, coil pack and throttle body. The cabin filter is located under the cowl panel, where all the windshield wiper mechanicals are located. It was FILTHY!!!! Like it had never been serviced. Very much like the one in this video:

Yeah, that’s definitely pretty bad!  I’m sure the filter placement doesn’t help filter longevity.

Placement seemed to be an afterthought for sure. R egular service intervals of the filter proved to be   much less disgusting.

The more I think about it, the more I kinda like idea of having the filter further up the system like that - the execution could have certainly been better though.

True. Filtering the air at the point of entry keeps the duct work free of contami na nts. Was it done the best way possible? P rob ably not.
