Let’s compare this new longboi, to a 20-year alleged-wagon that is known for not being much of an actual wagon...
First thing that stuck out to me: the A6 Avant has an even steeper rake on the hatch than an IS Sportcross.
But I did more digging, and actually gets worse:
The A6 is 18" longer and 7" wider. It has even less cargo space behind the back seats. This is supposed to be a full-size wagon!
Meanwhile, the now-dead Golf wagon had 30.4 cubic feet, and the TouX had 32.7...
Everything is depressing.
Edit: GershbermpsMuhFavritBurks challenged my numbers, and is correct. The screenshot in the body above — in my defense, the first thing that appeared when I googled 2021 allroad capacity.

So its 0.1 cubic feet less then a compact hatch

I just happened to look at the specs for an 05 Lexus LS430, which manages 20.2 cu ft while being a sedan, without a hatch.
Wild times.

Where are these numbers coming from? Audi’s website says the A6 Allroad gets 30 cu. ft. with the seats up.

If these follow the depreciation curve of the standard A6, they should be a great used deal almost immediately.

The cargo capacity on some crossovers is just as depressing...

I was somewhat disappointed with their interior space when we looked at them in person. But I was most disappointed with the dual screens. The car had been parked out in the sun and the HVAC controls were HOT. Think, black window or glass that has been left in direct sunlight, hot. As in, I could not leave my finger directly on the panel for more than a second. Which is sort of a problem when your fan control and temp control requires holding your finger until it gets to where you want it.
I was also bummed to find that VAG got the shift comtrol direction wrong again. Curse you VAG - it's push for down and pull for up!

There are multiple standards to measure the cargo space so it might not be accurate to compare directly numbers from cars two different eras and manufacturers.
The Golf Sportswage n and the TourX are both transverse front wheel drive cars which is way better in term of packaging.
My brother who has a Megane 3 Estate was shocked how small the cargo area of my A4 B7 Avant is as both car have simila r length but the A4 has Q uattro so the cargo area is starting extremely high and the engine compartment is also sensibly longer.

I just learned they killed off the Accent after next year...
To copy-paste what I just posted in another thread:
“Which really makes me sad, and a bit angry. So, for people looking for
cheaper new small car from Hyundai, their only option is the Venue
crossover, which is ACCENT-BASED. Now, I don’t like crossovers, but I
think the Venue is OK...that being said, I’d still rather have the
Accent hatch...
So if you’re going for the Venue over the
now-non-existant-after-this-year Accent hatch....you’re paying $2-3K
more for the Venue than you did for the Accent hatch, for a car BASED on
the Accent that will have LESS performance (because it’s just Accent
running gear with more weight), that gets LESS fuel economy.....
Like......WHY? Where is the logic?”
Yes, it has more cargo room than the Accent did, but how often are people REALLY going to need more cargo room? I don’t fill my entire car with groceries...

You would be shocked how many people don’t know the rear seats fold down and that they think you just need a ton of space behind them just in case.
The cargo space you gain is all vertical too, so less useful. I’d much rather transport lots of stuff in a hatchback for the low liftover, better fuel economy, better driving dynamics, superior visi bility, etc.
Plus the hatches being so much cheaper providing a great way to get into a Hyundai for people who are cash strapped and need reliable transportation.
Hey, there is still the Kia Rio, which somehow managed to be well proportioned despite being a compact sedan. No hatch :/

35, 64 with seats down, per the maker:

To clarify, we looked at an a6 with the 3.0t, not an allroad. But it felt cramped and the hvac thing really felt like a blaring issue. Particularly in the sunny heat of the south.

We get the Rio hatch up here, but no word on if that is going to be discontinued too or not! :(
