In October-18 I bought a 03 E46 320d Touring for £750. It was brilliant.
In June-20 I bought a 06 Mazda6 2.0 Diesel SW with 60k miles for £650. And it is shit.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
As described in the initial post, the car seemed great, despite some dings and scratches. I serviced it, and they couldn’t investigate the leak given how dirty the engine was. Suspension bushes need attention. But the rest was “OK”. The problem is that by changing the oil, the additive that went away with the old oil, and now the car smokes like a steam locomotive when cold starting, and dark smoke when on heavy throttle.
I’ve changed some fuel line seals that were the cause of the leak, and at some point will change the rocker cover gasket. But given the absurd blowby I’m getting, I suspect piston rings, and 1) this is not a work I’m willing to do on my daily driver in the garage; 2) The car doesn’t inspire me a lot to “save it” and it’s too expensive to repair in a garage. I even tried an oil additive but didn’t get any better. (would like to highlight that I tried to use the oil additive to stop the copious amount of smoke on the start, and not to hide the problem from the buyer)
So as soon as my V5 (registration) arrives, I’m selling it as spares/repairs. I will probably lose the service cost and a few quid on what I’ve paid, but I’ll be fair to the buyer.
This made a dent on my confidence in buying the next used car, so I’ll probably pay more to get a car from a dealer, with warranty and liable.
You can’t will all times, right?

Yeah...I’ll always buy used from new...the depreciation hit on new cars is just to great to bother, at least to me. I’ll always try and get my cars from a dealer though, as you at least get some piece of mind that way.

Bought a used car Friday. 89,000km/55k mi 1996 Cutlass Supreme. It’s barely been driven the last few years maybe 100kms since it’s last service in April 2019 . Started good, drove great.
On the drive home felt like the idle was going wonky, got home and parked it. Tried to go for a drive a few hours later and the car barely started, wouldn’t idle and got me about ten feet.
Turns out it was just a fuel pump and should be back on the road soon. Even the best used cars still end up biting you.

Just ask the POTUS. He’ll tell you that’s so.

Have you looked into a used engine swap?
I had some experience with diesels years ago when they were simpler and it was fun, but that ship has sailed.

If it wasn’t my daily driver I would take on a engine swap on the driveway.
Actually, If it wasn’t my daily driving, it wouldn’t be a Mazda6 Estate.

Yes, but I can’t be bothered to do it, the car doesn’t inspire me enough. If it was a car that I liked more I’d definitely look into it, afterall I can get a running engine for £700...

I get very very anxious with monthly payments. Had a leased Jazz/Fit before this wagon and it was dull, but it was very competent. But my anxiety and depression never got along well with car payments.

I think that’s what we’ll all be watching to see, don’t you think?

I’m not american nor live in the US, so my opinion is kind of irrelevant on that matter! :)

It’s relevant to me. I am greatly concerned with hour this nation is perceived abroad.

Oh, I didn't mean I know how. I just meant some can. I think if you're rich, it's easier.

My wife and I bought my son a 1995 Nissan 200sx last month so he can get himself to high school this fall. Only 115k miles, $1,700 and rust free. Loaded with power everything, a sunroof, teal paint and automatic. Slow but sporty. Last week it rained hard while him and I were out running errands in it. Sunroof leaks. Quite a bit. One or two YouTube vids later, and we’re cleaning out the front drains and contemplating taking out the headliner, which is sagging anyway, to get to the rear draining lines. Anyway, point being used cars are almost always a bit of a gamble. Especially older ones.

Nice mine was $2k CAD/$1500 USD.
The 200sx is a cool car. I drove 94 Sentra Coupe in highschool and my Brother had a 2000nx, another cool Nissan.
Cost of ownership of these older cars blows my mind. It’s so affordable.

Are you sure it’s not just the PCV valve that is broken?
In any case, you can certainly sell some parts for more than what you paid for it.
