I beleive these 2 photos sum up my time in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Rural King is basically an enormous Tractor Supply. For those not familiar, imagine a Wal-Mart, but dedicated to farmers. You can buy clothing, household goods, a ccessories, outdoor sporting good , tools, hardware, as well as specific things like livestock feed, fencing, and even baby chicks. They also have a large selection of tractor parts.

After work one day me and the fellas picked up a case of beer, drove down some dirt roads, cranked up the country music, and fished for 4 hours in S ullivan.

That really about sums up Terre Haute. We ate some decent BBQ, and also a good steak, otherwise it was fast good and carryout pizza. It was a busy trip, but based on the success of this trip I have a feeling I’m going to be spending more time out there in the future.

Bonus shot of some hot chicks at the Rural King.

I didn’t realize when I bought my Jeep how much my shopping habits would change. Now Rural King and TSC are part of my regular rotation.

Or were, at least, when I had a regular rotation and the world hadn’t gone mad.

I've never been to Terre Haute, but I feel like you could sum up a huge majority of the Midwest thusly.

You left out the real highlights of Terre Haute: square donuts and pies from the Pie Company!

I’ve also spent some time in South Dakota, and been to middle of nowhere Kansas and I believe you are correct.

Funny thing is, I have a friend from Indianapolis and I told her about my trip... she had no idea what a Rural King was. I tried to explain that it was like a giant Tractor Supply. She had no idea what that was either. It’s sometimes surprising j ust how insulated city and country people are from one another.

I spent some time at the federal penitentiary, there. Walk in and out everyday for almost a whole summer.

This wasn’t vacation, it was work.

I saw that place but wasn't able to go. It was a fairly busy work trip and my schedule didn't really sync up with their hours.  Maybe next time!

I wish I had a Rural King here in NoVA. Im sure it would upset all the NIMBY types.

Interesting...

My hotel was near the jail, but I didn't visit it.

There was a place just south of there, owned by one of the guards, he let us hang out there and go fishing.

And my coworkers got drunk at Stu’s on the golf course a LOT!

Rural King's store brand overalls are pretty nice, too. Not as good as Round House, but better quality than Liberty

I have family who live in Terre Haute. Anytime they come to visit, they bring some pies, and I’m always willing to accept a good banana cream pie!  The square donuts are just like regular donuts, only squire shaped....but again, they are good donuts and at least there is something to differentiate them.  I also recall Bandana’s BBQ being pretty decent.  That’s about all I can remember from the handful of times I’ve been out that way.

Im excited to go back now just for pies and donuts!

We ate at Bandanas. It was not the best BBQ I’ve ever had, but it was certainly not the worst, definitely in the upper 50%. Though the service was wonky - apparently the onoy waitress quit right before we walked in the door, so they quick pulled a busboy out of the back to wait tables. It was bad, but he tried, and we got free beers.

We also went to Logans for steaks, which were pretty good.

Yeah, they really can live in completely different worlds that are not far apart at all.

There are lots of hidden gems in Terre Haute. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is the #1 undergrad engineering college in t he country (yes, even above MIT). Square Donuts is legendary and the story is their recipe was stolen to start Krispy Kreme. And strangely, one of the best sushi places I’ve ever been is in in Terre Haute - Umi Grill.

The Hulman family, which 100% owned the Indianapolis Motor Speedway until last year when they sold it to Penske, is from Terre Haute. There are lots of Indy 500 and racing connections in the town.

Also, 1 of 2 Chrysler turbine cars in private hands is in Terre Haute. The other is in Leno’s collection.

Try Maurizios deep dish pizza next time. It’s great.

I will describe Rural King to somebody that does not know it as a Menards with more stuff that you need if you live in the country. TSC also has chicks btw, but Rural King has firearms!

I grew up in Marshall, IL, just across the Wabash River (which is awesome fishing! ) from Terre Haute. We wood cut class, drive to Terre Haute, go to the Honey Creek Mall and c ruze the Bash! That’s Wabash Street. It’s a college town with lots of Frat house’s and sorority’s. Wabash Street is where guys & girls would park their cute cars and just hung out to have fun. But that was the 80's! Terre Haute has a great night life, bars, eateries, small shops and of course, the Historic Indiana Theater. I'd prefer to go fishing over anything else

That sounds like a good time. Terre Haute, like a lot of rural placea, seem like they are pretty excellent if you’re good at making/finding your own fun. Which is something I’m usually pretty good at. Thank you for sharing.

I’ll be out there again I’m sure, and I will check it out.

We don’t have a Menards here in NoVa, so I’m not familiar with it. I passed one between Terre Haute and Sullivan, so I’ll check it out next time.
