. . . so I thought I would remind you. Remind you to remember the Paceman.
Do you ever wonder where all the two door SUVs went? No, of course you don’t. They pretty much died with the two door Explorer outside of the Wrangler.
Please, think for a moment. When is the last time you even saw a Mini Paceman, much less thought of one? The Paceman was a sales flop for a good reason. It just was a little too weird. The Countryman already occupied the same market with two more doors and left the poor Paceman high and dry.
Yes, it is somewhat of a shame, but I can’t say anything because I would never have bought one myself.
What is your take on this unloved and unremembered blip on our collective automotive memories? Did any of you own one? I have no idea what they were actually like, seeing as I have only noticed a couple ever .

The Countryman is the 4-door SUV, the Clubman is the stretched Ace & Gary mobile 4-door wagon.

Sorry, Countryman. I’ll correct.
My point still stands.

You are correct, sir, but that crazy Opponaut has a valid point more cor rect than yours.

I saw a grey Paceman this Friday, and I told my sister “look, I really liked that car a few years ago”
I liked the Paceman because it had AWD and the JCW version had like 240hp, all available with a manual . It was more spacious than the hatchback, and much prettier than the Countryman.
Was it bloated? Yes. But I think it was pretty cool. Now keep in mind that I also liked the Evoque coupe.

It just never quite made sense to get over the regular hatchback for the price premium. Same with the Evoque two doors. It was a much better looking car than the countryman, though the Clubman has them both beat and the regular Cooper is by far the prettiest.

Oh, bloat you say? Bloat makes Minis look less appealing every year. Pictured: the 2040 Mini Cooper S.

This is the Mini I think the least ab out:

I saw one the other day....but I’m good for not thinking of them, thanks. There should never be an SUV called a ‘Mini’, it’s just an affront to the heritage of the brand.

I saw this awful thing in Utah last week and I’d meant to make a DOTS post that said, “Look at this awful thing I saw.”

I don’t remember it at all

I was unaware, and shall endeavor to return to my previous state of blissful ignorance.

As a 3 door SUV fan, I’m pretty much obliged to like it, and I do, which is a struggle considering how I hate the Co untryman. I don’t know, fewer doors is the Mini spirit.

Ya’ll may never have got it. It wasn’t particularly interesting, so not a great loss.

The Cooper coupes or whatever they were called also never made sense. Still better than their even weirder looking brethren, the roadsters.

If you think about it, their 2010s brand revival was kind of a flop with the exception of the countryman and four door "Mini."
![]() 08/02/2020 at 19:09 |

Ha yes. I actually saw one recently also. As an R56 owner and fan, I’m glad they’ve mostly gotten over their lineup expansion experiment. Pretty much every one that isn’t a regular hardtop, convertible or 4-door variant made no sense at all.
![]() 08/02/2020 at 19:12 |

A bit! ‘Mini’ will always be about small, nippy cars to me!
![]() 08/02/2020 at 19:36 |

Agreed. They wasted a lot of money on developing super niche products that had very little appeal and confused the brand. They are much better as a small operation with well known market niches for fun small cars.
![]() 08/02/2020 at 19:38 |

It is, but a smallish three door CUV wasn’t what the market wanted.
Three door SUVs/CUVs are really getting rare. Before the Bronco and Defender, there was the Wrangler and ??? They pretty much died with the two door explorer other than that weird CUV Cabrio fad.
![]() 08/02/2020 at 19:39 |

And they are really better off with a small and focused lineup. The Paceman is not missed. It wasn't as nippy as the hatch but but didn't have the practicality of the "mini" Countryman (eww).

Yet I see more coupes and roadsters than Pacemen.

Mostly Countryman and Clubman in these parts. I have seen 1 Coupe, and it is hideous.

T here was a lady that had a green one in our office parking garage for a while - but you are absolutely correct, I can’t say I’d thought about it in 2020. The whole premise of the car is just so odd.
![]() 08/02/2020 at 21:43 |

It just never quite meshed with the supposed practicality of a crossover and the sporty image of Mini. It was a weird in betweener that didn't really do either quite well enough.

There is one in my driveway now.

But is it knackered? Doesn’t look so.
10 to 1, burners never respond. But nice plate and color scheme.

I saw a 3 door Evoque on Friday so this topic is fresh on my mind. Honestly I’m not more opposed to them than, say, a 3 door GTI. I believe the Paceman wasn’t nearly as much of a flop internationally.
![]() 08/02/2020 at 22:17 |

It was a weird half measure between two similar segments occupied almost entirely by Minis that didn’t really take sales away from anything but it s own brand. It wasn’t a bad execution, it was just a bad decision in an unsustainably enlarged portfolio of cars in a market rapidly moving away from two doors. I want to like it, but it was ill timed.
The Evoque was even more i ll timed though. And uglier. And way more expensive. Too bad the three door crossovers never really caught on.

It is actually very fun to drive. I put an iDrive throttle controller in it and that makes it more fun. The next trip will be to put lowering springs on it. My daily driver.

You might like it here on Oppo if that i s any indication.
That is a cool and uniq ue ride, especially with the wake up tune and the light modifications.

I suppose making it RHD they hoped to squeeze down profits out if you stubborn Aussies, but anyone could have foreseen its failure. Huh, that really is not many at all.

Not as ugly as the BMWs to come. The Paceman at least was well proportioned.

Relatable.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 22:59 |

And the other problem was they got stupid expensive and ran up to some competition they didn’t have the street cred to tackle.
![]() 08/03/2020 at 23:18 |

What competition? The Evoque convertible?
![]() 08/03/2020 at 23:56 |

I remember reading for example the coupe could easily get close to ( RWD) BMW and even Porsche money — and other cars with far more street cred.
I looked at a countryman when they first came out but ended up with a clubman instead, which I liked a lot. It was replaced with a Mk6 GTI which was a nice car but even more unreliable.
Having now a kid, I thought about revisiting the Countryman as I like the refreshed interior, but ended up with the V60. Still have and love the 2013 R56 though.
