Unfortunately, American Motors couldn’t afford completely new, the 1977 Electron was a repainted and facelifted concept car from the ‘60s.

I’ve theorized that the only reason we still have a Wrangler that has (mostly) the same open air experience/off-road chops/etc as the original MB is that Jeep has historically always been owned by a company who couldn’t actually afford to be in the automobile manufacturing biz, and thus both couldn’t risk losing the nostalgia market and couldn’t radically remake the design.
Willys-Overland, Kaiser, AMC, Renault, Chrysler, FCA, now Stellantis (ugh); always the underdog.

Basically. Since they’ve not stopped selling inspite of being the same design they’ve not been tempted to change it. (no cash strapped company is going to change a 70 YO design that still sells for a premium..)
It makes me wonder how much they'd have changed from Willys 1940s design if it weren't for changing safety regs..
