I declared too early of a victory when I pushed down on the coils and the Burgman stopped misfiring. 100 miles later it happened all over again.
Fine, time to get dirty.
I removed both coils. The one atfsgeoff replaced looks fine, so I’ll save it as a spare. The older coil on the right side has clearly lived a rougher life and was probably not operating the best.
New coils in, it ran better but they were so loose that I was sure I’d be back here soon enough, so out came the plugs, too.
Both plugs have damage where the coil packs grip. I’m sure this has something to do with why the coils can’t get any grip on them.
Fine, two new plugs and two new coils, hopefully this stops it from randomly losing a cylinder.
Update: Problem returned after only ten miles of riding. This time I jumped the FI connector and got a C25 code. C25 means coil 2.
Problem supposedly remains in the ignition system. Guess I’ll throw on the known good coil from before. If that continues to fail then I’m definitely looking at wires or something.

Most (all?) coils I’ve worked with have a bolt that holds the coil down to the valve cover. Is that a typical motorcycle thing, having the coil grip the top of the plug to stay in place?

Same! All the cars I’ve worked on have a bolt. I’m not sure if this Suzuki is typical for a motorcycle, but it’s indeed a friction hold.
This is a common enough issue with the Burgman 650 that some people have had to ride home physically holding a coil in place. Others report thousands of miles without issue. I’m hoping using new OE everything will stop this on my particular scoot.

My ski doo 800 eats spark plug caps. I keep 4 spares on the sled and spare plugs. On mine it is the engine vibrations breaking the connection to the plug wire inside the cap.

Man those plugs are pretty messed up, I never actually pulled them myself. Sorry it’s giving you so much trouble!
