Yeah... opinions vary. Most of my back roads Italian driving recollections are comprised of glimpses of steep grades, on narrow roads, behind old Fiat 500s and 2CVs at 27 MPH.

But maybe I was doing it wrong.

True Story— I once took the “luxury cruise ship” ferry service from Stockholm to Helsinki via the Islands. Anticipating the lavish service (in fairness the cabin was nice) I go down for dinner, famished, to find... EVERYTHING is herring-based, from a pureed dead fish paste “appetizer” (which wasn’t) to an all you can stand buffet of herring entrees to the crowing glory of dessert— shards of herring in green Jell-o.

When we docked the next morning I RAN to the nearest coffee bar to stuff my mouth full of pastries and espresso to get that taste out of my mouth.

I’m sure I was still green in the NOKIA meeting.

I have friends in Lombardy (all of whom survived COVID thankfully) in the foothills of the Alps..... they say the standing joke is that every Alpine Pass has a three mile long row of cars going less than 20 MPH on the uphill.  And, at the head of every line?  A struggling, sputtering 2CV nobody can get around and who refuses to pull off.  It’s an EU law...

Yeah. Thank gawd the water was calm and the ship had that “stabilization hardware system”. Add a little seasick to that scenario and it would have been ugly.

I will take Turkish cuisine ANYTIME over Nordic fish diets...
