1994 Jaguar XJ12

V12, twelve cylinder engine!

$5000 or best offer, motivated but not under pressure to sell. So please make reasonable offers.

This is the only year that Jaguar offered the V12 (XJ81) in the XJ40 body style, so it is very rare in the US.

Jaguar’s top of the line vehicle in 1994, this rare low mileage XJ12 has less than 93000 miles and is in excellent condition, showing expected wear and patina for its age.

This XJ12 comes from the time where Jaguar used solid polished stainless steel for the exterior bright work, and very little plastic anywhere! And the XJ12 received the highest quality leather of all models. Because of that, the doors shut with a solid thump that few cars can match, and car feels like a rolling bank vault!

The car is located in Sanford, NC.

301HP 6.0 Liter V-12

Approximately 92,700 miles, but still being driven so mileage may increase slightly.

Oyster (metallic gold) Exterior
Cream and Coffee Interior
US VIN SAJMW1340RC680824
UK VIN SAJJMWLS4RP680824

Some recent maintenance and repair items:

1 - New headliner installed by prior owner a few years ago. This is a huge plus as it is an expensive job, and the originals all sag by now.
2 - A new ABS accumulator has been fitted in 2019.
3 - Four new tires were installed in March 2020.
4 - A new battery installed in May 2020.
5 - New crankshaft position sensor installed June 2020.
6 - Oil change, with genuine Jaguar oil filter and new crush washer, June 2020.

The car is all original except for the following:

A - Aftermarket AM/FM/CD Pioneer radio, with remote control, that is fully functional.
B - Aftermarket “Jaguar” logo floor mats.
C - The problematic factory high-pressure hydraulic auto leveling rear suspension was already converted to the Jaguar conventional spring configuration so that saves a new owner the headache and expense of doing so. The conversion parts are no longer available, and were very expensive, so this is a huge bonus for the new owner that this conversion has already been done.

Leather shows expected age creases, armrest wear, wood intact but finish has typical age cracks, and the exterior clearcoat exhibits some haziness/ghosting in spots but is not peeling except for a very tiny area around the radio antenna grommet and a few minor rock chips on the front and other minor areas.

The XJ12 runs and drives, and all major options work except the air conditioning which currently only holds a full charge for a few days/week, but otherwise operates well and blows frigid once charged and will blow cool in cooler weather. Although not certain, we suspect the A/C system needs new o-rings.

Other minor issues that come to mind are:

- NOS rear console vent and lighter assembly installed, however no power to lighter. Likely a fuse or relay, but just haven’t put any time into it as I don’t use the lighter.
- Driver side rear sun-blind hook has pulled free of the perforated fabric. The sun-blind mechanism and retraction spring still works fine, but the hook will need to be reattached to the fabric. A previous owner had glued it at some point in the past, and that glue has since failed and the hook pulled free. It needs to be glued back on again. It is not noticeable unless looking for it, and doesn’t bother me since I don’t use the blinds. I have the parts, but again just haven’t put any time into fixing it.
- I don’t think the inflatable front seat lumbar supports work, although I’m not completely certain. This is a common failure on all series of XJ and frankly most old cars, usually due to the rubber air bladder developing a hole, or the pump failing. Both are easily fixed if desired, but require disassembling the seats, so I haven’t had any desire to do so.
- The front drivers side marker light works intermittently.
- The high mounted stop light (3rd brake light) has a delayed lighting after the first stop, adding approximately 1 second to light again per brake pedal press each time the pedal pressed, until enough time has been allowed for it to “recharge”. My suspicion is a failing capacitor in the relay, but haven’t tracked it down.

Given its age, I have no accident history, but it is apparent that it had a minor fender-bender around the passenger side rear quarter/door at some point many years ago that has been repaired. I have an extensive, but not complete, set of maintenance documentation from previous owners.

The drivers door seal has an approximate 12" tear along the bottom, but it does not appear to leak air or water from that seal. However I have a new door seal that the new owner can install.

I’ve only owned the car for about 2 years, and am selling due to too many projects and need to reduce the inventory. Plus I just don’t have time to drive everything to keep all in top condition. This XJ12 is a perfect starting point for an easy restoration or just maintain and drive as-is for weekend parading and shows.

It’s a really beautiful car, especially when in the sunlight. It always gets a lot of attention, waves and positive comments when driven around town as you just don’t see nice examples of these Jaguars on the road anymore.

Additional photos (200+) can be seen here:

The XJ12 is available for viewing and test drives now, but please reach out to coordinate a time that works for everyone’s schedule.

Payment options: Cash or cashier’s check. A cashier’s check will only be acceptable when issued with us present at the buyer’s bank to validate authenticity, which can prove challenging for some buyers if their bank lobby is not yet open to the public.

If I had an extra $5k at the moment, I’d be mighty tempted to add a second Jag to my fleet. This seems like the best kind of bad idea. At $5k, it feels like you could walk away from the car for parts/scrap value when something big invariably happens without life changing consequences. And hey, maybe you get some years of weekend fun out of it before that happens.

I’d actually say NP. Interesting, I’m a Jag nut and I didn’t even know they made the XJ40 in V12, let alone as late as 1994. The XJ40 started in 1988.

Also I thought the V12 were all 5.3l; musta bored it out a little in later years

Yeah, it was a one year only model, making this a particularly rare and potentially desirable car for one lucky buyer.

They’re not the prettiest of Jags, but if you want all the other benefits of an old-school Jag V12 (smoothness, torque, good ride & handling, interior) this is one of the lowest-risk routes into it. By this stage post-Leyland quality improvements were starting to really show through, and when it does go wrong, they’re cheaper to fix (for V12 values of cheap) than the Germans. Probably less of a gamble than an equivalent vintage V12 Merc. Sounds like this guy has a pretty good handle on - and is open about - the issues, which hopefully implies there aren’t more major ones lurking.

I vote NP. Though in reality I’d never actually buy an XJ40 derivative, because of the above-mentioned “not the prettiest” factor. Call me shallow.

Yup, they took it up to 6.0 starting in 1992. Later V12 XJS ’s were 6.0 too.

It’s a stroker, so a lot of it is mix and match backwards compatible. If you wa n t to go racing in a V12 Jag of any flav our (i.e. if you have pots of mo ney and care more about the sound and the glory than actual results) , a 6 .0 with pre-HE 5.3 heads and pistons (or pre-HE engine with 6.0 crank and conrods) is the go-to com bo.

Right. Series 3 or (and?) bust…

Besides, then you can have mechanics with lots that look like this…

Niiiii ce. Though havi ng owned an S3 XJ6 myself, I may be a little bias ed. That mechanic’s lot looks familiar, too.

Personally, if I’m goi ng to go bust on a V12 I’m a little more stupid ambitious t ha n “just” an S3 . When I win the lottery I’m building me a Broadspeed XJ12C clone, and my half-way-serious may-even-happen-in-the -next-couple-of-years plan involves a straight piped XJS track rat.

Imports unlimited, north of Chicago. Just dropped a bunch of money there but now I have new rear brakes, some bushings and the diff fluid has a chance of staying in.

Also we should get together ha.  Last time I was at North shore sports cars they were restoring and manual swapping an XJ12c. :drool

New bushings: the most underrated value for money improvement you can make to an old Jag. Enjoy the ride that God and Bill Heynes  intended.

Where did you find this info? I am leaning towards buying one of these cars right now to get the V12 for..... reasons

Originally from a couple of guys in my local Jaguar Drivers Club chapter who had race-modified XJ12s left over from the days when JDCNZ had an XJ racing series going. But there’s content on the Jag forums which goes into the details. I oversimplified a bit - there’s only certain permutations of bits which are drop-ins due to the various changes over the years: the easiest way is drop early heads on a 6.0 engine. I couldn’t quickly find the thread which goes into the details on this, but it’s in there somewhere.

Basically the reason you do it is because it’s an oversquare and overbuilt engine which will rev way beyond what its breathing will support, so the stroker doesn’t lose any rev capacity relative to the smaller engine, but it gets more torque due to displacement, so more potential power (6.0/5.3=13% more, in fact). However the HE heads have major flow limitations which can’t be fixed - they were explicitly designed to give very high swirl, which is incompatible with moving lots of air. So if you want to go to town on valves, cams, inlets, exhausts, etc, you’re badly handicapping yourself if you start with an HE head. OTOH if you’re *not* planning on going to town on breathing, you might as well stick with the original heads. Plus swapping heads also forces you to run racegas or lower the compression, since the HEs have extremely high compression which is only possible on pump gas thanks to the high swirl of their heads.
