Kinja'd!!!

Took the missus car shopping Saturday. This was the first thing we test drove and we just signed the papers yesterday. It’s a 2017 Q3 Prestige with the sport package . Just ticked over 50k and came with two years of CPO warranty for about half of the original sticker price.

It’s the first car I’ve ever purchased at a dealer (and not on Craigslist). It’s also the first car I’ve ever financed, which makes me feel icky.

As far as compact crossovers go, it’s actually not bad to drive. It has the S line package with adjustable dampers. It’s no GTI but it’s closer than you’d think.

I’d hope it was better than a GTI in every metric other than ride height.

Enjoy! I don’t think VW or a brand in the family has made a car that could be called bad from an objective sense since.... maybe the Eos? Which was only bad from a certain point of view. They just make rock solid cars. Just mind the oil level. The TFSI variant of the 2.0t has an oil consumption tolerance of a half liter every 1000 km in pre-2012 motors, but it’s been known to happen in later stuff too, unfortunately.

My car didn't come with a manual so when I needed oil capacity and the like I had to look up an online manual.

Yeah, from what I’ve read it might be worth fitting a catch can as the turbo can get gunky from all the oil

“not a GTI”

Built on the same platform though.........

I’d imagine the Audi has more aluminum in the suspension, and higher quality dampers, along with more NVH accommodations.

EDIT: congrats on the new car!

Does it have the same power/torque as the GTI? Also Quattro I assume?

It’s rated to 200hp and 207lb-ft, whereas the GTI has 210 and 258. So kinda, not really. I’m already looking at an intake and a tune though...

Y es Quattro too

It’s supposed to be the same thing as the T-something based on the Golf (which is a lifter Golf) so this is a lifted A3.

H istorically the Audi have their “signature” 2 parts aluminium doors while the similar VW have more basic/common steel doors but i don’t know if it’s still a thing.

And the most powerful non S Audi is usually similar if not identical to the VW GTI in term of engine/gearbox .

But i am not sure that there are very different suspension bits (except being possibly a little stiffer springs/shocks ) on the same platform, in the past at least, the aluminium suspension parts were on the longitudinal platforms that are not shared anymore with VW.

There are. Audi uses aluminum control arms, where the Golf/GTI is all stamped steel.

An d the platform is the MQB platform that underpins a ton of VAG small to midsize vehicles.

As far as body panels/doors/etc, those are going to be different between each brand, but the substructures are all shared, just twea ked and modified.

The most expensive part of a car to engineer , is the portion behind the motor, and in front of the steering wheel, so these areas are basically identical between all MQB based cars. At least as far as locations of electronics, and the structural bits.

LOL, I just checked and there are 46 cars/crossovers on the MQB platform!!

Seems like the previous generation of Q3 had indeed aluminium lower control arms that were also used in the Passat and Seat Alhambra.

But the new generation have steel ones ( P/N is   3Q0407151S) and it seems to be also the same part on the VW Tiguan and Arteon (and probably the European Passat as well) .

So i was initially wrong, it’s the Q2 which is the lifted A3 and similar to the T-Cross which is a lifted Golf.

That powertrain seemed to be the Q3's downfall in comparos. It’s also specific to the US. Whereas ROW the Q3 has always gotten basically the contemporary A3's powertrain (the newer turbo engines with DSGs), in the US it’s rated the same as a B7 A4 (‘05-’08) also with a 6-spd auto . So kinda outdated for the class. It’s not actually the same drivetrain (A4 is longitudinal and this is transverse) but it always struck me that it was the exact same specs.

Which Chicagoland Audi dealer did you buy from? How was the experience especially with Covid?

Audi Exchange in Highland Park. It was a very easy experience. They don’ t have the salesperson go with you on the test drive (which is a bonus IMO) and they wipe down the cars before and after you drive . Otherwise it was a pretty normal experience.

The negotiation and paperwork was pretty painless. I’d definitely recommend them. I shopped around a lot of CPO Q3s and they had some of the lowest prices in the country.
