I bought this M43-C1 in 2015 or 2016, my dad bought one at the same time. His died two years ago. Just wouldn’t power on at all. It always had freezing issues and mine didn’t, so I assumed I was in the clear. Nope. Yesterday it started flashing constantly, whatever was on the screen. Doesn’t matter what input, it’s just always flashing. I called Vizio, and it’s a known issue. I’ve looked around online and if you look up Vizio flickering screen, it’s a very common problem. They tell you to power cycle it, and factory reset it. If that doesn’t work, and if it’s under warranty, they send you a refurb. Mine is out of warranty, so I’m SOL. 4 or 5 years is an unacceptably short life for a freaking TV. I was not planning on buying a TV for years.  I don’t know what I’m replacing this with, but it sure as shit won’t be a Vizio.

On the other hand, a friend gave me a Vizio back in 2013 that he had for 4 years, so circa 2009. It’s in my bedroom now and works just fine.

Til that Vizio is an American company. Shame they didn’t measure up. It would be nice to support a North American electronics brand, though I’m sure it’s all manufactured offshore so f em anyway, but still it  would have been nice.

I think the late 2000s was the last time TVs were made well. I got a little Sony flatscreen from my grandpa, it was from 2007 or 8, and gave it to my sister after I got this one. She’s still using it.

I have a 40" Vizio from 2016 as a replacement for a stolen 43" Samsung (Circa 2008 with a self-done recently replaced power supply) . That Vizio had a dark shading issue on top of the scren but power cycling fixed it and it honestly hasnt happend in several years. It was moved to a bedroom and replaced with a TCL 6-series 55". I’m extremely happy with my TCL-6 . B uilt in Roku. works great. But, if you have the funds, grab the Sony 950H. Had I to do it again, I probably would have gone for the Sony at twice the price , but I would have had to buy a separate 4k Roku, as chromecast can eat a pair of rotten bull nuts.

Well you probably paid less than half of what a quality TV would have cost. With lowering costs you should now be able to take the other half of what you would have spent and buy a set that is superior to anything from 2015. After this due to inflation you will still have effectively spent less money than if you had bought quality back then but now you have a better TV.

The tv I had a as a teenager was from the mid eighties, worked fine I thin it was a 26” full cabinet wood panel style. It was replaced by a 32 JVC that’s probably 20 years old now. We have a 3-4 year old flat screen in the living room, but that old JVC is still kicking in our bedroom. Old school electrics just last longer. Idk is quality is the problem or complexity of the newer technology.

Also I’ve never paid money for a TV. The first one was sitting on a curb and I picked it up, the second was given to me when a co-worker was moving and didn’t want to take the 40-50lb  tv, and the newest one was a 5 year anniversary present from my father in law.

These two Vizios are the only TVs we’ve had that have died now that I think about it. Before this I had a little Sony flatscreen from 2000 something, and my sister still has it. My family had a Sony tube TV for most of my life growing up and we gave it to someone when we were given a huge flatscreen Toshiba tube TV. That one still worked fine, my dad just didn’t want to move it when he moved, so he got that Vizio 43". Older electrics definitely lasted longer, I think it’s partly complexity of newer stuff, but mostly being built to fail so they can sell more new ones.

You might be right, I think I might be confusing them with another brand, but now I can’t remember who.  But as it stands, I don’t know if anyone actually manufactures displays in the US.  I think any “made in the USA” TV is really “assembled in the USA” using foreign sourced parts.

Samsung is the next to avoid. I used to install TV’s , Samsung and Vizio were the ones that had the most issues. In my opinion Sony if you feel spendy , if not then look at TCL or Hisense. TCL and Hisense weren’t around when I was installing but I have a TCL and friends have a Hisense that are doing well. In a pinch I grabbed an open box 55" TCL series 5 from Best Buy for $225 . Quality picture, nice hardware. I feel they slid in where Panasonic used to be...especially if they prove to be reliable. Panasonic was my go to brand, never an issue with a single one out of many many owned and installed. I’d choose LG over Samsung if those were the only 2 choices.

Honestly, once the “smart” computer in them isn’t keeping up, just connect a device to an input and ignore that the “smart” functionality exists . The only reason to replace the screen is that the screen itself isn’t working right, you really want a bigger one, or some major technology change that makes the available inputs obsolete . I figure any decent quality 4K display sold today should last until 4K is outdated , but it’ll be attached to some external device for streaming long before that due to the “smart” functionality being archaic by that point .

Aside from being able to charge more for them and ad revenue, I don’t know why they integrate these features...

We have a 2015 Samsung that has no problems that are the fault of the manufacturer, though the panel was slightly damaged when we mounted it back in 2018. Between that and always being too small for the room, we’re replacing it with a newer bigger one...

The Sony I bought in 2010 is still working. I think it was in the $1500 range, so mid tier for a 60" in those times. My current TCL makes it look silly in the PQ department and the Sony was professionally calibrated. I have only eyeballed the calibration on the TCL as it’s not hooked up to a source.

I’ll be looking at 6 and 8 series TCL’s when I’m shopping for the next.

LG I have very limited experience with so I don’t have much opinion on them. I did set one up for a friend and found the UI pretty straight forward.

All new TVs are going to have some kind of issue whether it’s hardware or software. They just aren’t going to support it after the warranty period. If a lack of a software update makes the “smart” TV go dumb, you can still buy an external box like a roku or apple TV and use the TV as a monitor. If the hardware craps out, you’re out of luck.

I still have a TV that I bought back in 1990. It still works, although the resolution is terrible compared to TVs today. Now that the over-the-air broadcasts are digital, I have to buy a converter if I still want to use it that way.

Kinja'd!!! horizonsofkhaos > gmctavish needs more space
07/21/2020 at 16:09

Kinja'd!!!2

If you can narrow down the issue to a specific circuit board on the TV a lot of the time they’re super easy to replace. Most modern tv’s have a main board, a logic board and then some stuff for the power supply. There’s sites online with some of the parts or even ebay. Replacing the boards is usually just zipping out the screws from the back cover, undoing a couple ribbon cables and taking out a couple more screws from the board. I’ve had to replace the main board on an older Panasonic plasma a couple times. $100 or so for the board and maybe 30 minutes to install.

If it’s a panel issue then unfortunately you’re kinda stuck. If that’s the case you could strip the boards out and flip them on ebay and make a couple bucks to put towards a newer TV.

VIzzo said to reboot and factory reset .Didn’t do shit. Then dude said to hold power button and volume button at the same time .or some B.S. like that DIDN’T DO CRAP EXCEPT WASTE MY TIME .

Vizio said GOOD LUCK and hung up the phone

NEVER NEVER AGAIN .

I’ve got 4 Visio’s. The one in the living room which is a Best Buy open box I bought in 2009 stays on all the time! No problems at all! Still looks great! The others are fine too.

Visio is based in the USA and has great customer service. I lost one of my remotes and I called them and presto one was in the mail.

I’m over Sony and Samsung.

I agree with this. I've seen more people have issues with Samsung than any other brand. I've had a mid range Sony since 2016 with no issues at all. I only recommend Sony for a nicer TV and LG to save a couple bucks.

There are more disposable than others model lines within each companies portfolio. The super affordable Vizio’s have more problems than t he $ 1300+ models in my experience . I have a quantum Vizio in my living room from early 2018 still going strong, but who knows.

As far as other   brands , I had a Sony RPTV that became a intermittent nightmare to own and deal with CS , and eventually I gave it away for free.

My first OLED from LG had to have it’s main board replaced twice within 4 months after purchase (warrantied..but still). No brand is a guarantee.

Hmm, hasn’t been my experience. I bought a Vizio 42" TV back in 2011. It’s been through three moves, and has never given me any issues.

Bummer about your TV though. I’d offer advice, but I haven’t the faintest idea how to work on flatscreen televisions.

Woops, my bad, I’m out of the loop on TVs. Last time I went shopping for one, like 7 years ago, I wound up with a Westinghouse because it was the only name they had that I recognized. Still works fine, probably because I don’t put many hours on it.

Apparently they’re not, I must have had a memory lapse. They were built really well, though

5-6 years seems to be the new expected life span for smart TV’s. The updates bog them down eventually.

TV’s are so damn  cheap now relative to 25 years ago, it’s kinda hard to complain.

I’ve owned Vizio D series, M series, and P series TV’s. I prefer backlit, for better black isolation over edgelit. The P series has the best picture for the price. I’ve seen the best, the reference series, which sets the standard for picture quality. Vizio has the best in bright ness, also. I’ve only had one TV fail, under warranty, back in 2005. It was the motherboard, which was a known issue, and would have cost $300 to fix. Now, you can buy the parts and fix them yourself via YouTube. Still happy with smartcast 55" after 4 years.

I have me a Vizio M507G which I (reluctantly) bought for myself for Christmas. No issues so far, but based on the numerous amount of people complaining about vizios not lasting as long, im not expecting it to last more than two years. But that’s okay, bc I plan on getting a full time job by then and ill hopefully have more than enough to afford an LG OLED. Still have me an early Vizio from '06 that works fine, but then again this was back when they was owned by Sony. Seems to me that Vizio went under at the start of the 2010s. Regardless, good luck to you, and hopefully my Vizio lasts me longer than the 3-5 year lifespan I seem to see on it

Unplug the power cord from the back of the tv and then plug it back in that fixed mine

Nobody makes anything good nowadays. Not Sony not Samsung, nobody. You run the risk with anything you purchase now. That’s why the warranty business is booming! Costco and BJ's offer their own extended warranty at no cost often times on these TVs. It's almost like they already know...

From what I gather on the internet, it’s a problem with capacitors on the “TCOM” board or something. My dad’s probably has a dead power supply board, so we’re gonna open them both up and see if parts from one can make the other work.

I’m glad to hear that you’ve had luck with them, but with two dead and a third with a failing backlight between me and my dad, I’m done with them

I tried that a few times, also clearing the RAM by holding the power button for 15 seconds after unplugging. No luck. Factory reset didn’t fix it either

Thanks! My dad still has his broken one, so we’re gonna open them both up and see if parts from one can fix the other. If not, I think I’m getting a Sony or an LG
