T hey’re blaming this on the Covid-19 epidemic.

But in doing some casual research, apparently they’ve been going downhill for a while now.

3 years ago, the shares were around $20. Today they closed at around 75 cents.

The cash position and the debt on their balance sheet also tells a story

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And I suspect the growing popularity of stuff like electric lawn mowers must have been hurting them. Hell... I haven’t used a gas powered mower for over a decade.

Here is a link to the 6 wheel hybrid car they made years ago that Jay Leno drove:

They should bring back the Flyer, a cheap basic car

There’s also Harbor Freight’s cheap Predator engines that really hurt them

The cheap people get the Predator, while everyone else uses Honda.

I wonder how much of it was due to lower-cost competitors from China. I haven’t bought a gas mower (ever), so I have no idea what they come with these days. I remember from my lawn-mowing days in my youth, the nice ones were either Honda, Briggs & Stratton, or Tecumseh.

Did they do anything to differentiate their position in the market?  What would have made them better than their competitors?  If there’s no real differentiating factor, or if the only factor is price, someone can always under-cut you.

Harbor Freight introduced a cheap engine line called Predator a few years ago. Someone on YouTube installed a Predator in a car. Engines as low as $100

If you just want something cheap, get a Predator. Otherwise, go Honda.

Most cheap lawn mowers still use Briggs and Stratton, with the more expensive ones using Kohler, Honda, or Kawasaki.

The small-engine V-twins cost as much as a car engine! WTF? The HF Predator V-twins are barely under $1000, with the name brands costing almost double!

You can get a brand-new motorcycle for $1000 from txpowersports

Noooo! I like B&S. Kohler makes crap, except for their top level stuff.

I’ll treat my existing lawn equipment with lots of care.

Nobody wants cheap basic cars. Hell, even in places like India, cheap basic cars like the Tata Nano didn’t even sell well even though you would think it would in that market.

But I suspect you may be right about cheap Predator engines also hurting them.

If only Rex EV’s t ook off, Briggs could’ve supplied the small engine range extender

My current lawnmower is a ten year old B&S powered Snapper but my next one will probably be electric. I don’t know when that will be since this one still starts on the first pull 95% of the time.

We bought one recently! McCullagh (actually made by Husqvarna) with a B & S engine. They’re used because they’re cheap and have been in production since God was a boy. Having so said, our mower has a fancy OHV engine.

Yeah, the cheap ones are worthless if they break and I can’t believe they don’t have issues. I like my stuff to work so I have a couple Hondas. I just got a kit for propane on my new one, gasoline has never been in it. You can always sell a Honda for a decent amount if you want to. I’m ready for PG&E to fuck up a surprise fire this year, the only Honda I had last year was in Hawaii so I had to pack the damn freezer and fridge with ice bags. Now I can run a couple extension cords around to wherever we need them.

If you take care of them, they can easily last 20+ years.

For me, part of the motivation for moving away from a gas mower is not aggravating my asthma every time I cut the grass... along with certain green ‘save the planet for future generations’ principles I have.

Electrics constitute less than 30% of new lawnmower sales in the US - that’s pretty high, but it still leaves plenty of business for gas engine manufacturers to capture, and B&S does make engines for many other purposes (though lawnmowers have to be their biggest market. I’d suspect the biggest issue is cheap competition from overseas, combined with general mismanagement and lack of innovation. Basically what’s behind most every industrial failure in the US since Bethlehem Steel.

I’ve been on the fence about an electric for awhile now, I think my yard is right on the edge of what an electric can do on one charge. Would piss me off if I was left with a little strip undone, or had to go back in an hour or two and finish it. Maybe if my current mower dies, I’ll pull the trigger.

This surprises me. B&S has been very much into the b attery power segment. Their Snapper division has a complete line of 48v and 82v equiment.

They even offer an 82v elec tric lawn mower engine that has the same b olt pattern of their gas engines, for those look ing to repower their mowers.

That’s part of it. Hence the anti-dumping complaint they filed back in February. Another part is various subsidiaries they had picked up over the years simply not cutting it (no pun intended). Ferris, Snapper, Simplicity.. I’ve spent considerable time working with both Kohler and Briggs.. Briggs was better prepared  than Kohler  for the coming electric OPE landscape..  hopefully they shed some of the dead weight and come back to doing what they do well, building engines.  If we lose Briggs, prepare to spend a lot more on new power equipment.
