I’ve been meaning to post a link for a while now, and I’ve had three missed opportunities. Actually, more than that.

So, I’m finally going to share the magic link that ties all of the above Oppo posts together: a road trip, a biographical sketch, a scavenger hunt, and an automotive lament.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

As several people noticed, the document I shared in “Back to the shop for me” was generated using TeX, one of the oldest pieces of widely-used software that most people have never heard of.

TeX was created decades ago by renowned computer scientist Donald Knuth when he was frustrated by the poor quality of published mathematical books and papers. Essentially there was no good way to print formulas and other mathematical constructs, short of painstaking manual layout that few publishers were willing to pay for.

Knuth, of course, is the subject of the biographical piece I shared in “The people’s computer scientist”.

Where I actually planned in advance to share this link was the “Signs, signs, everywhere signs” article from my recent camping trip. But, alas, I forgot.

So, three of my posts came and went without sharing this.

Back to the point: Knuth and his wife Jill took a road trip through Ohio in 2003 and shot every diamond road sign they found, and have added more since.

Quite a few were submitted by others, so there are some interesting ones from New Zealand, e.g.

So Dusty, if you’re still looking for ideas for the scavenger hunt (the 4th opportunity I missed), here’s a gold mine. If nothing else, make ‘em find a diamond sign with an animal on it.

So, do you mean they took a photo or they unloaded some buckshot into every sign?
