While I wait to find out !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I’ve found a couple of local(ish) XJs for sale.
This one is high mileage, and automatic, but still interesting. I don’t run across a lot of XJ Wagoneers.

And kiltedpadre has kindly volunteered to take a peek at this one: a manual 6 cylinder XJ. Shame it’s such a non-color.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Why does it have to be white?

The white one just gives you the opportunity to experiment with plasti-dip.

That would be fun. Some nice teal or yellow (or both!).

The first thing I think of on that ‘84 is the Renix issues I remember reading about on forums, but Google says the GM V6 doesn’t have that. Does it have the closed cooling system that gives fits?

Honestly I’m very unfamiliar with the older XJs, so I have no idea.

I wouldn’t wish an 84-86 on ANYBODY. Those powertrains are so so so so bad.

No no no 84-86. Not now, not ever. The firewall is also different so you can’t swap in a 4.0. You CAN fit a Chevy 4.3 V6 tho.

Good to know, thanks.

The plan is to slide over there tomorrow at lunch.

Thanks. The transmission shop told me they’d probably call me today, but I’m suspecting that was over-optimistic.
Hopefully the wall o’ text I gave them leads them to not give it to the FNG.

Yea man. Those early ones were junk junk junk. The renix controlled trucks get a bad rep but they’re real easy to diagnose and easy to swap to newer stuff if you want. 93-94 or 98-99 are the best ones IMHO.

You should write a post about it so I can store it away. Easier than me doing the research!

Blargh. My XJ days are behind me. I think in my group of friends we have gone through 20 of em.

Still hoping for my first. Someday .

My first car was an XJ. I remember from being active on the forums that once the 4.0L went to the “High Output” in ‘91 or ‘92, all issues were resolved. Prior to that was risky.

They are super cool, tiny machines. IMHO best left as daily drivers in stock, OEM+, or something like 3" and 33" tires. Once you start getting bigger than that there are better platforms to start from scratch with IMO.

I have degenerative disc disease, so obscenely large tires aren’t of interest to me anyway. I’ll be lucky to be able to replace a 33” tire in an emergency without putting myself in a hospital.

Oh, yikes. Yea looking back the best part of the platform was it’s light weight. Once you start going real big and doing it right with chassis stiffening and a cage it becomes a pig and needs a new motor in which case you should have just started with a bigger truck or one with a frame.
