Abandoned Renault 4CV

I know old Renaults weren’t known for being particularly rust resistant, but this poor 4CV was really put through the wringer !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . There really isn’t much left of it but hints remain to give us a glimpse into what once was.

Kinja'd!!!

The weight of the doors were apparently too much for the rusty remains of this poor B pillar. Both doors are hinged off it and amusingly remain intact once separated from the car. You can see an original hubcap here too. It appears it is riding on one replacement wheel.

Kinja'd!!!

I wonder what stopped the doors from both opening at the same time and colliding? Maybe you were just supposed to be extra careful. What a wacky setup!

Kinja'd!!!

The most distinctive identifying part of the remains of this Renault 4CV is the vented rear engine compartment. If it weren’t for the four doors though I almost would have mistaken it for a Fiat 600.

Kinja'd!!!

No engine or gearbox there now, anyways, though it appears the differential remains.

Kinja'd!!!

The distinctive rear mounted fuel filler surround is pretty interesting.

Kinja'd!!!

You can see that same shape carried into the interior in the form of the gauge cluster. I wonder why they blocked off the glove compartment opening on the drivers side.

Kinja'd!!!

Well, that brings us to the end of this forlorn 4CV. Such a quirky little thing was never likely to survive the shifting fads and wide open distances of American roads over time, but this wreck is still sad to see. I’ve never seen an intact one but maybe I will some day.

Renault 4CV’s wacky surprise feature is that “ fuel filler ”. It’s actually the radiator cap! Pop the cap open and get scalded . That must have bee n fun trap for inexperienced fuel pump assistants. The real fuel filler is in the engine compartment (the red cap).

I wouldn't have been any better. Ah, the days when dangerous design was the norm. Why on earth? How many gas station pump attendants got scalded from that? Many.

The stuff of nightmares:

Kinja'd!!!

Literally- the other night I dreamt that I had bought a Jeep in the wintertime, and because of all the snow I had failed to inspect anything underneath. And now that I had th e Jeep at home, I was going through it and to my horror discovered that it was missing front brake rotors and the rear diff cover. Apparently s omehow I got it home like that! So relieved that it was just a dream.

T hat still sounds like a better dream than I had. I was viciously murdered like 4 times as 4 different members of a family. It was like a horror movie and really genuinely awful.

Of course realizing you totally got ripped off is pretty bad. Dreaming of buying a 4CV would have been more interesting.

It has less salvageable parts than project POStal.

Someone here pointed out that what I thought was a fuel filler was actually the radiator fill cap. What a dangerous design!

The good old days when scalding gas pump attendees was just plain family fun.
