Until the automatic starts wearing out and shifting comes late and with a noticeable clunk that makes you think something fell off the car...

One of the bolts backed out on my shift handle once, leavi ng the shifter flopping around on the remaining bolt. It happened just as I was exiting a freeway, too. I managed to m ak e i t   t o the carpool lot just a stone’s throw away where my carpooling coworker had a small too l kit in his truck. Got it all tightened back up, and later added some locknuts to keep it from happening again.
