after looking into computers a little more I had the thought of putting a tower in my basement and getting a wireless monitor. I still want the flexibility of being able to working in different rooms but i t sounds like the wireless monitor dont ’ t work they way I though. I thought it would just be like a wireless mouse where it has a USB plug and just connects when the computer wakes up. The wireless monitors sound more like casting to a TV.
this monitor is $200 and the tower I’m looking at is $400 which comes to $600 which is less than the $1000 laptop i’m looking at.

Wireless is never as reliable and responsive as wired if lag is an issue you will not be happy with the result

If your goal is the power of a tower with the flexibility of a laptop, perhaps you could set up a headless tower and use a cheap laptop with remote desktop.
We have a couple of banks of virtual machines that run on servers in our home office that I remote into from my laptop at home. My home server is also running three virtual machines that I remote into from my laptop. None of the VMs have monitors, keyboards, or a mouse.

This. I used to be ALL about wireless but have transitioned back to cords in a big way.

i wouldn’ t be gaming, mostly just drafting, photo shop , sketchup. would the lag be that bad?

not necessarily the flexibility of a laptop, I was more excited about saving some money and getting a bigger screen but still being able to move around the house to some extent.

Yeah I think you are going to be really disappointed with lag. I can’t think of a legit wireless solution that solves that issue, even remote desktop has lag when doing CAD work. That just gets super frustrating when you are trying to hustle.

I have a coworker who is remot ing to his desk top for civil 3D and I’d say his productivity is down 20% at least. The guy isn’t very tech savvy to begin with but when we do screen shares it’s painful to watch.

i’ve used remote desktop before, where I’m working on the office computer but from home. I thought this was something differe nt. I thought this would just be removing the cord that connects the computer and tower basically how a cordless mouse works.

I’m no expert, but it would depend on the range, materials in between and other interference.
Ranging from “huh, that is slightly annoying” to “FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK”

My guess is the amount of data transfer to get good video quality and response is not available through a technology like blue tooth. Maybe over a really good wifi system?

I just saw this review today.
It looks promising, but I’m not sure if the distance from your basement to the room where you plan to play is greater than 16ft. Maybe you can get creative with extending the HDMI cables on each end.

I think wireless monitors use Miracast. If that’s the case I can give you some first hand experience. We have a microsoft wireless display adapter hooked to the HDMI on our main TV. We mainly use it for streaming video content that doesn’t have a dedicated ps4 app. For that application it works great. Frame rates, resolution, video quality are all good.
Miracast runs a point to point ad-hoc WiFi connection, so there’s plenty of bandwidth for video + audio. Latency isn’t very problematic for general use. I wouldn’t play call of duty with it, but my wife has no problems playing Civ6 on the big screen cast from her laptop over the wireless.
Where I think you might run into trouble is range. Depending on how powerful the system is you only get about 50ft of range. With obstructions (like a floor) in the way that could be cut in half. So I’m not sure how good the UX would be if you’re in a different room than the PC as I’ve never really tested that scenario.
The MS wireless adapter is pretty cheap though and quite handy if you want to get one and test it out without spending big money on a wireless monitor.

Why not remote desktop? You can use it on tablets and phones or but a cheap laptop

Very good wireless video transmission exists. I have one in the studio. It was 2 grand

i want to use the bigger screen. I could set up a computer in the basm ent and remote to the dining room but then i’d be getting a lap top and a desktop to get that to work and then i’d be back on the laptop. I want the bi gger screen and performance of a tower, i just dont want to have to physically connect to it. I dont think what I want exists

It does, but it is not cheap

More than likely yes. Think about 20th of a second mouse lag when doing graphic design

I bought an MSI GS 75 Stealth back just before XMas and I <3 it. It was, um, rather spendy. Like > 1 Jankwagen in price, but man it’s worth it. I say just go with a 17" laptop!
