Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I just received a box of goods that I ordered on FleaBay. Some items were new and some used. The GPS was one of the used items, but all the listing said was that it had a broken mount, a problem easily rectified with a $4 part.

What you’re looking at is a problem that wasn’t disclosed, namely that the USB connector had completely broken free from the circuit board. Had I known that it had this major fault I wouldn’t have made the purchase. The other items are OK, but the main reason for this purchase was to get my hands on that GPS. &#%*...

I’ve put in for a refund and we’ll see what happens next.

I know most people use their phones instead of a GPS, but I still like the separate standalone device, particularly since I don’t have unlimited data. This was a Nuvi 65LM - nothing fancy, but I wanted the larger screen and thought I got a killer deal on this lot. But as always, if something seems to be too good to be true...

Are these soldered connections done my robots? That seems extremely precede to do by hand.

It is actually fixable by scraping off the solder mask on the trace to pin 1 and t he vias to pins 2+3, then using a bit of 28-30 awg wire to bridge the gap. Not super easy nor something that is particularly robust, but possible.

It’s doable though. I’ve fixed many a USB drive by buying Dollar Store USB printer cables, snipping off the USB ‘B’ end that plugs into the printer and soldering the USB ‘A’ end onto the board of the flash drive where the plug had ripped off, then covering the new plug join with hot glue to protect it and pr event it from moving ...not pretty, but I still routinely use two of them here at home when doing my computer repair work for people to back up files and they still work 100% fine!

You sure about that? It looks like the traces ripped cleanly off of the board.

I’ve done a similar repair on an ASUS tablet PC, the results are functional, but delicate... It *can* be done, but if you aren’t up for it, that's fair. I know how that works...

The pads absolutely are ripped off. But what they connect TO is not.

Kinja'd!!!

Purple is where the pads normally are, red is what they connect to. You’ll also need to do a trace repair on the top. I would still go for a refund before repairing this . And I’m a professional repair tech.

Let’s put it this way - I was taught how to solder using a 100/130W gun. My technique is a little, uh, brutal, to say the least. Finesse isn’t a word you could use to describe my technique...

So learn something new. Refund or not, extend yourself and try. Small s oldering iron is <$10 at H arbor Freight. Use a mounted magnifying glass (also <$10 @ HF) and plenty of local light to see what yer doing .

I’ll have to find it to see what model number it is, but I have one you could have on the cheap plus shipping. It does have the lifetime maps and I think a 6" screen.
